MEPs call for investigation into Cambridge Analytica and Facebook allegations

The European Parliament says it will investigate whether UK data firm Cambridge Analytica mishandled user data from Facebook in order to sway political elections. 

 

Reporting from The Guardian accuses Cambridge Analytica of using data harvested without authorization of about 50 million Facebook users around the world.

UK authorities seek court warrant to search Cambridge Analytica premises

Britain's Information Commissioner is applying for a court warrant to search the premises of a political consulting firm accused of using the personal data of 50 million Facebook users to influence the 2016 US presidential election. 

It comes as executives from Cambridge Analytica which denies any wrongdoing, were secretly filmed by undercover reporters suggesting the company could use bribery and so-called honey traps to discredit politicians.  From London, Catherine Drew reports.

39 Indians missing for four years in Iraq declared dead

The Indian government has confirmed that 39 Indian nationals who were missing for four years in Iraq have died.

The bodies of the missing Indians were discovered in a mass grave near Mosul.

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrested over alleged cash from Gaddafi

Italy seizes charity boat saving rescuing in mediterranean

Authorities in Italy have seized a boat run by a charity which was trying to save migrants from smugglers boats in the Mediterranean.

The ship had picked up 218 people and was refusing to hand them over to the Libyan which would have returned them to North Africa.

UK FIRM UNDER PRESSURE OVER FACEBOOK DATA AND POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS

The UK's Information Commissioner is trying to secure a warrant to search Cambridge Analytica, which is accused of using personal data of Facebook users to influence the 2016 US election.

Channel 4 News has also filmed Cambridge Analytica executives suggesting using 'girls', bribes and the discrediting of politicians in political campaigns.

Police step up hunt for serial bomber in Texas

A manhunt is underway for a serial bomber the US city of Austin.

Facebook faces questions over misuse of user data

Investors are nervously watching tech stocks after Facebook led a sell off on Wall Street over the misuse of its customers' data.

Shares of the social media network plunged almost seven percent after reports that Cambridge Analytica collected raw information on 50 million users' profiles without their consent.

Trump demands death penalty for some drug crimes

Tech Stocks Slide with Facebook News

A tech stock slide has wiped more than 80 billion dollars off the market value of Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Alphabet. 

Facebook accounted for more than 35 billion dollars of that total. 


As Technology Correspondent Rachel Silverman reports this follows revelations that data was harvested from millions of Facebook user profiles.

Arizona woman is first pedestrian killed by driverless car

A woman in Arizona has become the first pedestrian known to have been killed by a driverless car.


The vehicle operated by Uber struck the woman as she was crossing a street.

UN urges end to "catastrophic" Syria fighting

The United Nations has called for an end to fighting in two conflict
zones in Syria which it says is creating a "catastrophic situation."

Self-driving Uber kills US pedestrian

A self-driving Uber has hit and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona.

Business groups urge Trump to not impose new tariffs on China

A large coalition of U.S. business groups is urging the Trump administration to not impose massive new tariffs on Chinese imports of information technology, telecommunications, and consumer products.

The Trump administration has already imposed heavy tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from around the globe — a move aimed largely at curbing those imports from China.

4th bomb explodes in Texas in less than a month
