Balkans on high alert after political assassination

Kosovo's Prime Minister has assured Europe that his country remains 'calm and stable', as investigators continue to hunt for the killer of a politician based in the country's Serbian north. Serbia has called the assassination of Oliver Ivanovic a 'terrorist act' and suspended reconciliation talks with its neighbour. Dan Ashby has more.

Parents held on suspicion of torture in California

The parents of 13 siblings, who were found chained to their beds in
Southern California, are being held on suspicion of torture.

David and Louise Turpin were taken into custody after one of the
children escaped and notified police.

US Justice Dep't appeals judge's ruling on DACA

The U.S. Justice Department says it will take the rare step of asking the Supreme Court to reverse a recent decision by a federal judge to block President Trump's decision to end DACA, the Obama-era program that allows young, undocumented immigrants to remain in the country.

Venezuelan gov’t confirms death of alleged terrorist

The Venezuelan Government has confirmed the death of former police pilot and intelligence officer Óscar Pérez, whom President Maduro had accused of being a terrorist. 


Perez had earned a national reputation as an action movie star before becoming a well-known figure in Venezuela's opposition.

White House pushes merit-based immigration

The White House is pushing changing to a merit-based immigration program, as the political impasse remains unchanged over continued funding for the U.S. government versus key policies concerning immigrants.

The Democrats want a deal on DACA - the young people brought to the U.S. by their parents but without proper documentation and they feel it must be tied to the funding proposals.

The negotiations have been complicated by the president's use of crass and vulgar language.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders insists a merit-based system doesn't discriminate.

The American president's physician, who has cared for previous presidents, finds Donald Trump overweight, but generally very healthy.

Dr. Ronny Johnson also confirmed that President Trump requested a cognitive screening, following a series of questions about his mental stability or possible symptoms of dementia.

Dr. Ronny Jackson says, other than weight loss, he has few concerns about the president's overall health.

U.S. withholds $65 million in funding to UN Palestinian refugee agency

The United States has announced it's withholding over half of its
funding to the United Nations relief agency for Palestinians.

This comes days after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he
wouldn't accept any peace plan put forward by the United States.

The announcement came as the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was
laying out his priorities for the year ahead.

WH staff not serving Pres. Trump - Sen. Graham

Senator Lindsey Graham believes someone on the White House staff is to blame for the impasse over immigration reform and President Donald Trump's vulgar comments, which have put Washington on a path to a government shutdown.

The funding plan for the U.S. federal government expires January 19 and the American president has made the political situation much more complicated by using vulgar and crass language to describe immigrants.

Senator Graham didn't want to revisit the president's choice of words, but made it clear, the staff is not helping.

UK supermarket giant pledges to cut plastic packaging by 2023

A major British supermarket chain has pledged to eliminate plastic packaging from all of its own-brand products.

Iceland, which specializes in frozen food, said it would use paper and pulp trays and paper bags instead within five years.

Warnings many other small business will suffer after Carillion collapse

The British government is warning that private companies working for the failed construction giant Carillion on private sector deals will only receive two days of government support.
