Polls open in German elections

Polls have opened in Germany's federal parliamentary elections, with Angela Merkel and her conservative party expected to stay in control of the government, barring a major upset.

However, the results of the smaller parties could have a big impact on the makeup of the country's next government.

Defence ties between Indian and the United States are expected to strengthen with US defence secretary James Mattis scheduled to visit New Delhi.

North Korean Foreign Minister renews threat to attack USA

North Korea's foreign minister says US President Donald Trump is on a "suicide mission", and he says the country won't stop developing nuclear weapons until it achieves a balance of power with the US.


President Trump has threatened to destroy North Korea if Kim Jong Un authorizes nuclear tests that target American interests.

North Korea says rocket attack on US "inevitable"

North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho has told the United Nations General Assembly that American President Donald Trump has made a rocket attack on the "entire US mainland inevitable".

Senator McCain derails Republican healthcare plan

US Senator John McCain says he's opposed to the latest Republican healthcare bill - dealing a potentially fatal blow to President Trump's efforts to repeal the law known as Obamacare.

Republicans have been almost universally opposed to Barack Obama's healthcare reforms introduced almost eight years ago - but their efforts to replace the law have hit numerous hurdles.

NFL player’s family sue league over his “severe” brain disease

The family of American football player Aaron Hernandez is suing the
league after researchers discovered he had a "severe case" of the
brain disease CTE.

UK PM SETS OUT BREXIT AGENDA



The UK Prime Minister Theresa May has sought to break the deadlock in Brexit negotiations using a speech in Florence Italy, in which she outlined a number of proposals.


The Prime Minster promised there would be a financial settlement when it came to the UK's divorce bill after Brexit and spoke of a transitional period after the UK leaves the bloc in 2019.

UK PM PROPOSES TWO YEAR BREXIT TRANSITION

In a long awaited speech by the UK Prime Minister, she set out further proposals on Brexit and stressed that the UK's departure from the EU would set the stage for a new and creative partnership between Britain and the other 27 EU member states.


The speech in Florence, Italy was aimed at breaking the deadlock in negotiations in Brussels. And she promised to honour financial commitments to the bloc during the period of the UK's membership.


Part of the Prime Minister's proposals included a two year transition period after the UK leave the Union in March 2019.

Uber loses London licence

The ride and hail app Uber has lost its licence to operate in London, following a review by Transport For London.


The licensing body said Uber was not fit for purpose and had demonstrated a lack of corporate responsibility. Uber intends to appeal the decision.

Catalan leader insists referendum will go ahead despite police crackdown

The regional president of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, has insisted the independence referendum planned for next Sunday will go ahead - despite police raids on local government offices and the detention of officials organizing the vote.
