19 dead as Hurricane Irma takes aim at Florida

The death toll from Hurricane Irma has climbed to 19, as Caribbean Islands figure out how much damage was done, as the storm rampages across the Bahamas.

Cuba was essentially shut down, as officials in the American State of Florida warned the time to get out is now.

Florida was devastated 25 years ago by Hurricane Andrew, and as our correspondent in Fort Lauderdale Giles Gibson reports, state officials hope they are prepared for the arrival of Hurricane Irma.

33 dead in Mexican earthquake

The death toll in the Mexican earthquake is topping 33 and climbing.

The 8.2 tremor struck off the southern coast of Mexico, with the provinces of Oaxaca and Chiapas taking the worst hit, although the ground was shaking as far away as Mexico City.

The earthquake was also felt in neighboring Guatemala.

Floridians flee Hurricane Irma

With 16 confirmed dead from Hurricane Irma, ships are steaming toward the Caribbean islands first hit by the massive storm to bring relief supplies.

The tourist resorts on Cuba have been evacuated and Florida's two many highways north are jammed as hundreds of thousands flee the storm which is wider than Florida is broad.

Experts are warning that this could be the costliest storm in American history with Florida Governor Rick Scott repeating his warning, it's also likely to be deadly.

The current track of the storm is to take a direct hit at Miami, with Florida Governor Rick Scott saying his entire state will feel the impact of the storm.

UN: 270,000 Rohingya refugees flee Myanmar

The United Nations says at least 270,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled
from Myanmar to neighboring Bangladesh in the last two weeks.

The UN has called the dramatic increase of refugees, escaping
violence, "alarming".

Uber Under New FBI Probe

The ride-hailing company Uber has confirmed that it's under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

The Wall Street Journal says the FBI is looking into software that was allegedly used to interfere with the operations of a rival firm, Lyft.

Florida braces for Hurricane Irma

Just north of Cuba, Hurricane Irma is rampaging across the Bahamas, taking aim at the 20 million citizens of the American state of Florida.

The storm is already blamed for at least 11 deaths, even as the wind speeds have slowed a little an average of 155 miles per hour or 240 kilometers.

Our correspondent in Florida Mary MacCarthy is in Fort Lauderdale just north of Miami.

AT LEAST 27 DEAD IN MEXICAN QUAKE

At least 27 people have been killed after what's thought to have been the strongest earthquake Mexico has seen in a century.

The 8.2 magnitude quake struck off Mexico's southern coast.

Several Mexican states are reporting severe damage to buildings and it's feared the death toll will rise further.

A Tsunami warning's been issued for Mexico and other nearby nations.

HURRICANE IRMA NOW CATEGORY 4

At least 14 people are known to have died as Hurricane Irma continues its path from the Caribbean towards the US.

The British overseas territory of Turks and Caicos was hit by a category five hurricane for the first time.

There are reports of looting on the badly hit island of Saint Martin.

The storm has been downgraded to a category four storm but officials warn it is still likely to cause major further damage.

Britain, France and the Netherlands have all sent ships, rescue teams and supplies to the region.

Governor of the British Virgin Islands Gus Jaspert has declared a state of emergency there.

Madeline McCann Police Ask UK Government For More Funding



Police investigating the disappearance of toddler Madeline McCann, who disappeared from her family's holiday home in Portugal in 2007, have asked the UK government for more funding for their investigation.

Security forces sanitise godman's headquarters, curfew in place

Weeks after self-styled godman Ram Rahim Singh was sentenced to 20 years in jail for raping two women followers 18 years ago, a massive search operation is on at his headquarters in the Indian town of Sirsa.

Russian military chief meets NATO General to calm war games nerves

Evacuation orders "unprecedented" in Florida ahead of Irma's arrival

In Florida, evacuation orders are being expanded as the state orders an unprecedented number of residents to flee the storm's path.


In Miami, more than 650 thousand residents have been ordered to leave and both the state's East and West coasts are braced for Irma's impact.
