UN agencies deploying to assist with Irma emergency response

United Nations humanitarian agencies are getting ready to assist in the emergency response as Hurricane Irma moves over the Caribbean.

UN teams are being deployed to the region to aid local teams and governments in areas likely to see major impact from the storm, which is expected to affect as many as 37 million people.

US to work with China following North Korea nuclear test

Destabilizing provocation - US DefSec speaks with Japan, South Korea

The recent nuclear test by North Korea is a destabilizing provocation, U.S. Defence Secretary James Mattis told his counterparts from South Korea and Japan.

An independent analysis group 38 North has published pictures which appear to confirm the size of the nuclear test, due to the landslides and damage to the land above the test site.

UN: Syrian government used chemical weapons 27 times

United Nations war crime investigators say the Syria government has
used chemical weapons at least 27 times since the start of the
conflict.

The inquiry also blamed government forces for the most recent attack
in April, in which 80 people died.

Compromise needed to deal with DACA recipients - Speaker Ryan

Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives is cautiously optimistic the U.S. Congress can find a legislative solution for the DACA recipients.

DACA - deferred action for childhood arrivals - allowed the children of undocumented adults to obtain work and study permits, a program the Trump administration rescinded.

Speaker Ryan wants to find a solution for these young people, but says the original program was not constitutional.

State of emergency declared for Florida - Hurricane Irma

Florida governor Rick Scott has declared a state of emergency ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Irma, what's thought to be the largest storm ever to threaten the United States.

The National Hurricane Center forecasts the storm as a "POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC CATEGORY 5" with sustained winds of over 185 miles per hour or 295 kilometers.

Florida Governor Rick Scott urged his citizens to be prepared to leave.

Myanmar seeks protection from UN members

UK Prime Minister says she aims to keep net migration at sustainable levels after Brexit

UK Prime Minister Theresa May has been justifying her government's immigration plans as it prepares to leave the European Union.

It comes following a leaked Home Office proposal on immigration, which indicates the UK government is seeking to put a cap on the number of unskilled workers and the length of time they can stay in Britain.

The Guardian has published documents suggesting high-skilled workers would be extended the right to remain in the UK longer.

Mrs May told MPs at Prime Minster's questions that her government wants to ensure that net migration is kept at sustainable levels.

Judge awards $70 million settlement to detainees on Manus Island

At least 1400 current and former Manus Island detainees on Papua New Guinea will be paid their share of $70 million ($US56 million) in compensation before the centre closes next month.
