Merkel holds off challenger in campaign debate

German chancellor Angela Merkel fended off attacks from her challenger Martin Schulz in their first and only television debate before federal elections in under three weeks.

Both candidates however said they will seek to break off Turkey's accession talks to the European Union, amid deteriorating ties with Ankara.

India gets first full-time woman Defence Minister

In a Cabinet reshuffle announced yesterday, India has got its first full-time woman Defence Minister in Nirmala Sitharaman. 

With this decision, India now has 6 Cabinet rank ministers who are women.

According to the United Nations, India ranks 148 on a list of 193 countries when it comes to representation of women in Parliament.

US Defense Secretary vows "massive military response" to North Korea

US defense secretary James Mattis has warned of a "massive military response" to any threat to the US or its allies by North Korea.

Pyongyang says it has successfully tested a hydrogen bomb that could be loaded on to a long-range missile.

General Mattis spoke outside the White House after a national security meeting with President Trump. He said Trump wanted to be briefed on each of the "many military options" for dealing with the North Korean nuclear threat. 

He told reporters the US would defend itself and reassured that its commitments to its allies South Korea and Japan, are "ironclad".

Trump expected to scrap program that protects undocumented immigrants who came to the US as children

It's expected that President Donald Trump will end a program that grants work permits to undocumented immigrants who arrived in the country as children - so-called "dreamers".

Washington threatens delay in recovery funds for hurricane victims

The US Treasury Secretary has said that recovery funds for victims of the Texas hurricane could be delayed if Congress doesn't increase the government's debt limit.

President Trump has requested nearly 8 billion dollars in aid for relief and rebuilding efforts.

Trump threatens trade ban against countries "doing business" with North Korea

The White House says President Trump will announce his decision on the future of a massive youth immigration program next week. 
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program…known as DACA is a signature initiative of the Obama Administration which protects undocumented young people brought to the US as children a chance to study or work in the US without fear of deportation.

Trump to Make Decision on Massive Youth Immigration Program on Tuesday

President Donald Trump will announce next Tuesday whether he's going to scrap an  Obama-era program providing legal status to nearly 800,000 young people.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival program known as DACA doesn't provide a path to residency or citizenship.

But it does enable young people to renew a visa every two years so that they can work or study without fear of deportation.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders would not say whether pressure from some Republicans would persuade him to maintain the program.

UN chief urges restraint in Myanmar's Rakhine state

The latest international response to the deadly violence in Myanmar has come from the United Nations chief himself. 


Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Friday raised his deep concerns over reports of an excessive response by security forces in Rakhine State.


Tensions between the state and Rohingya (roh-hing-jah) rebels erupted into deadly clashes on August 25.

As Hurricane Harvey victims apply for assistance, White House pushes for federal aid

U.S. unemployment rate ticks up to 4.4%

The unemployment rate in the United States has ticked up slightly to
4.4% after falling to 16-year lows the month before.

The monthly jobs report also revealed that 156,000 jobs were created
in August, shy of the 170,000 many analysts expected.

Donald Trump attacks fired FBI Director James Comey on Twitter over Hillary Clinton investigation


U.S. President Trump took to Twitter again early Friday, to blast former FBI Director James Comey for allegedly exonerating his political rival Hillary Clinton, before concluding his investigation of her.

The old grudge surfaced after two Republican lawmakers, who serve on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said fresh evidence showed that Comey had written a statement clearing Clinton, back in May- before interviewing her or her aides.
