"Make it happen" - calls to counter injustice at memorial service

The mother of Heather Heyer - the young woman killed when a car slammed into a group of counter-protestors in Charlottesville, Virginia - is urging Americans to speak up about injustice, just as her daughter would have.

In a rare critical statement from former presidents, the Bushes have said that America must always reject racial bigotry.

Politicians and analysts have noted that it appears President Trump is somehow trying to normalize or legitimize the grievances of the neo-nazis, neo-Confederates, and white supremacists.

Susan Bro, the mother of Heather Heyer, wants her daughter's legacy of standing up and participating peacefully but pointedly,  to live on.

Pres. Trump stuns many with statements on Charlottesville

Many are trying to digest the 23-minute impromput press conference by U.S. President Donald Trump, during which he said the protestors on the far conservative right were the same as the counter-protestors from the far left.

The origins of the protest was the decision by the city of Charlottesville to remove the statue of General Robert E. Lee, who led the Confederate Army during the Civil War.

Others noted there were quiet counter protests led by mainline protestant pastors, standing arm-in-arm with civil rights campaigners such as Cornel West.

President Trump focused on the violence.

Cities around the U.S. have decided to remove statues with ties to the Civil War, some to private land, some entirely.
