UK's Temporary customs union EU plan confusing say critics

The British government has set out an ambitious new customs arrangement that it wants in place with the European Union after the UK's exit from the block.

Ministers say they want "free and frictionless" trade with European countries in an arrangement that could include a temporary customs union after Brexit,  to prevent goods being held up at ports and terminals on both sides.

When the temporary arrangement expires, the UK is hoping it will either have a highly streamlined border or a new partnership with the EU,  with no customs border at all.

The proposals have been criticized by political opponents including Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable, who says they are confusing.
