Putin orders Washington to cut 755 of its diplomatic staff

LEAD:


The Russian President has confirmed that the United States has to cut 755 of its diplomatic staff in Russia. Moscow is also seizing some US diplomatic property.  The move comes after the US Senate approved new sanctions against Russia for its alleged interference in the 2016 US election.  Julia Lyubova reports from Moscow.

U.S. condemns vote in Venezuela

Th U.S. government has condemned the Venezuela's vote to elect a controversial new constitutional assembly.

In a statement released Sunday night, the State Department said the new body seems designed to "undermine the Venezuelan people's right to self-determination."

Violent Clashes Accompany Venezuelan Elections

Election officials  are counting the ballots and the death toll after Venezuelans took to the polls yesterday . 

The vote was for members of a  constituent assembly which will have the power to rewrite the constitution, in an election the Venezuelan opposition says is simply  a ploy to keep President Nicolas Maduro in power.

In massive challenge to Trump, Putin orders 755 US diplomats to leave Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin is ordering more than 750 US diplomats to leave the country no later than September 1st.


He says the move is retaliation for fresh sanctions legislation passed by the US Congress last week.
