New US Ambassador to China: North Korea is a top priority


The US ambassador to China says he will make combating the threat from North Korea a top priority in his new role.

Last month US President Donald Trump announced that Terry Brandstad would take over as his country's representative in Beijing.

UK Government forms deal with Norther Ireland's DUP

The British government has reached a deal with Northern Ireland's DUP party, to receive their support in its minority government.


It follows two weeks of talks since Theresa May's Conservative party lost its majority in the snap UK election.

DEAL REACHED TO SECURE UK GOVERNMENT

UK Prime Minister Theresa May has reached a deal with the DUP of Northern Ireland to prop up her minority government.

The arrangement will see the Democratic Unionists support the Conservative government on key votes in Parliament.

In exchange, the DUP has secured extra funding for Northern Ireland, and guarantees on some policy areas.

Critics of the deal say it could harm the Northern Ireland peace process.

But DUP leader Arlene Foster says it's in the national interest.

Australian Casino operator staff jailed in China

Three Australian employees of Crown Resorts have been sentenced to nine to 10 months' jail in China while the James Packer-controlled casino operator will pay fines totalling $US1.29 million (just over 1 million pounds) (1.15 million euros) on behalf of 16 employees found guilty on gambling-related charges in a Shanghai court.

POLICE INJURED IN LONDON 'RIOT'

Six police officers have been injured in rioting in east London.

Trouble developed at a protest over the death of a man after a traffic stop by police.

Protesters claim Edir Frederico Da Costa was beaten by Met Police officers.

He died six days after being stopped by police.

The protest saw bricks thrown and fires lit in the Stratford and Forest Gate areas of east London.

FIFA confirms doping investigation of Russia's football team

Global soccer body FIFA confirmed it is investigating Russia's soccer team over doping allegations raised following the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) independent report. It revealed hundreds of Russian athletes were involved or benefited from an elaborate state-sponsored doping scheme – which Moscow denies ever existed. SIX DEAD AFTER PASSENGER BOAT SINKS IN COLOMBIA

At least six people have died after a passenger boat sank on a resevoir in the north west of Colombia.

Officials in the resort town of Guatape say 16 people are still missing and 133 were rescued.

Local residents claim the four-deck Almirante had sunk before.

Some passengers complained at not having lifejackets as the boat went down.

India hikes visa fees for foreigners by 50%

Any foreigner wanting to travel to India will now have to pay 50% more for a visa.

The hike announced by the Indian government is reportedly an attempt to match visa fees charged internationally by other countries.

Many experts believe this is a response to many countries like the US, Australia and New Zealand announcing work visa curbs.
