State Department denies problem over hiring diplomats

The US State Department is denying there's a problem over the appointment of ambassadors and other senior officials around the world.

President Donald Trump in a tweet has blamed the Democrats for allegedly slowing down the appointment of government officials at home and overseas.

But new State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert has told reporters there's no major recruitment problem. She says there's a strong group of people going through the hiring pipeline, but the process is slow because of the background checks required.

A senior US diplomat in Beijing has resigned over President Trump's decision to pull out of the Paris Climate accord, but Ms Nauert said she was not aware of any other diplomats contemplating similar action.

Washington offers to mediate Qatar dispute with neighbours

The United States is offering to mediate in a major rift between the Gulf country of Qatar and its neighbours.

Saudi Arabia and Egypt are leading economic and political sanctions on Qatar, claiming the country has supported terrorist organisations.

The action has put Washington in a difficult position, as Qatar hosts a major US military base.

US State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert told reporters that Washington was given little notice of the sanctions, but rejected suggestions that the rift would harm regional anti-terrorism efforts.
