Labour pledges to guarantee rights of EU nationals if they win election

Britain's opposition Labour party have promised to unilaterally guarantee the rights of EU nationals living in the UK, should they win the upcoming general election in June.   

The party say they'll also scrap the Conservative government's Brexit plans and focus on a deal prioritizing jobs and workers rights.       From London, Catherine Drew reports.

Indian Maoist rebels kill 25 troops

US Carries Out First Double Execution since 2000

The US state of Arkansas has put to death inmate Marcel Williams, marking the country's first double execution since the year 2000.

Marcel Williams was pronounced dead at the Cummins Unit in the southeast of the state, just hours after inmate Jack Jones was executed earlier in the evening.

Supreme Court Clears Way for GM To Face Ignition Switch Lawsuit

America's top court has cleared the way for General Motors to face what could end up amounting to billions of dollars in legal claims, over a deadly fault in ignition switches.

The Supreme Court would not hear the carmaker's appeal, which argued that its 2009 bankruptcy protected it from the claim.

At their largest annual conference, US broadcasters urged to "question those in power"

The head of America's National Association of Broadcasters says the industry has a duty to "question those in power".


He was speaking at the first annual NAB meeting to take place during President Trump's administration, and he challenged America's broadcasters "to find the truth".

Entire US Senate invited to White House for North Korea briefing

President Trump has invited all 100 members of the US Senate to attend a briefing on North Korea at the White House on Wednesday.


It's a rare move and comes after the President accused the North Koreans of "continued belligerence" in the region.

US not ruling out new sanctions on North Korea

The US isn't ruling out new sanctions and other measures to put pressure on North Korea to stop its nuclear development.

Tensions between Washington and Pyongyang have been ramping up in recent weeks...with North Korea threatening to sink a US Navy aircraft carrier. 

Speaking to reporters in Washington DC...State Department Deputy Spokesperson Mark Toner said the US is exploring all options to denuclearise the Korean peninsula:

US sanctions Syria over chemical weapons attack


The United States is imposing sanctions on 271 Syrian scientists and officials it accuses of being involved in the production of chemical weapons.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin (pron: Mi-nu-shin) announced the sanctions in Washington DC, three weeks after the Assad regime was accused of dropping sarin gas on civlians, killing an estimated 86 people.

The punishments include travel bans, a seizure of assets, and a ban on US organisations and individuals from doing business with those targeted by the sanctions.

President Trump tells Security Council it must act on its resolutions


American president Donald Trump has taken the unusual step of meeting with the United Nations Security Council - an organisation he has criticised in the past for inaction and over-spending.

The meeting took place at the White House as the UN faces issues such as nuclear tensions in North Korea and the conflict in Syria, along with a US threat to cut funding to some UN programmes.

The US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, told reporters that Mr Trump made clear what the US expects of the UN.
