UN: Over 300,000 People Have Fled Mosul

The UN has said more than 300,000 people have fled from Mosul since the start of a campaign to take back the Iraqi city from the so-called Islamic State group.

US pulls funds for UN family planning agency

The United States has announced it will no longer fund a United
Nations agency that promotes family planning in over 150 nations.

The US State Department has accused the UN Population Fund of helping
to aid coercive abortion in China.

Kyrgyz national named as potential suspect in St.Petersburg bombing

A spokesman for the Kyrgyzstan's security service said the likely suspect in the deadly Monday blast in the Russian city of St. Petersburg is a Kyrgyz-born Russian citizen. Russian and Kyrgyz authorities are working to identify the man suspected of planting one bomb at a metro station in St.Petersburg and setting another one off in a metro carriage on Monday afternoon. US to review reform agreements with troubled police departments

The US attorney general has ordered a national review of reform agreements with troubled police departments, a move that could put a key part of President Obama's criminal justice reforms in jeopardy.

Scotland and California Sign Climate Change Agreement

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and California's Governor Jerry Brown have signed an agreement to work together on climate change.

US To Hold UN Security Council Meeting on Human Rights

US President Donald Trump's ambassador to the United Nations has said she wants to hold a Security Council meeting on human rights later this month, while the US holds the body's rotating presidency - setting up a potential conflict with Russia and China, which oppose the topic being discussed in the Council. 

After a closed-door meeting on Monday to agree on the Council's programme for the month, the proposed discussion on 18th April was left off the calendar.

But even though Russia has said it could call for a rare procedural vote to block the move, Ms. Haley said she would be fighting to ensure its eventual inclusion:

White House comfortable with using the "nuclear option" for Supreme Court nominee

The White House says President Trump is comfortable with the prospect of Senate Republicans using the "nuclear option" to get Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch confirmed.

Democrats have enough votes to use a tactic called a filibuster to block his nomination but Republicans may then resort to changing the rules to ram through their nominee.  

It's called the "nuclear option" because it could blow-up any resemblance of bipartisanship in the closely-divided Senate.

Democrats chose to block final vote on US Supreme Court nominee

The Democrats have enough votes in the U.S. Senate to employ the filibuster and block the full floor vote of Neil Gorsuch to join the U.S. Supreme Court.

The White House has defended the decision for the president's son-in-law to visit Iraq.

Social Media Warrants Help Identify Suspects in Streamed Sexual Assault

Detectives in Chicago are working to identify several offenders in the sexual assault of a 15 year old girls that was streamed last month onFacebook Live. A 14 year old boy has been arrested and charged in the assault and a warrant has been issued for another teenager.

Filibuster expected for Supreme Court nominee

Senate Democrats have enough votes to filibuster a full floor vote on Neil Gorsuch to join the U.S. Supreme Court.

A filibuster is when 60 votes are required for cloture - that is, ending debate on a vote.

Republicans have denounced what they call the politicization of the Supreme Court nomination process, but it was Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell who refused to move forward on the nomination of Merrick Garland, then U.S. President Barack Obama's choice for the court.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, the top ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, explained why she cannot vote for Neil Gorsuch.
