US President Donald Trump's ambassador to the United Nations has said she wants to hold a Security Council meeting on human rights later this month, while the US holds the body's rotating presidency - setting up a potential conflict with Russia and China, which oppose the topic being discussed in the Council.

After a closed-door meeting on Monday to agree on the Council's programme for the month, the proposed discussion on 18th April was left off the calendar.

White House comfortable with using the "nuclear option" for Supreme Court nominee

The White House says President Trump is comfortable with the prospect of Senate Republicans using the "nuclear option" to get Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch confirmed.

Democrats have enough votes to use a tactic called a filibuster to block his nomination but Republicans may then resort to changing the rules to ram through their nominee.

It's called the "nuclear option" because it could blow-up any resemblance of bipartisanship in the closely-divided Senate.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer says the next step is up to the Senate majority leader

A filibuster is when 60 votes are required for cloture - that is, ending debate on a vote.
