UK'S GCHQ DENIES TAPPING TRUMP

The UK's GCHQ intelligence agency has put out a rare statement strongly denying it wiretapped Donald Trump before he became US President.

It follows claims repeated by the White House that Trump Tower in New York had been put under surveillance by then President Barack Obama - with the help of GCHQ.

Trump and Merkel Set to Meet At White House

US President Donald Trump is set to welcome German Chancellor Angela Merkel to the White House on Friday, after the original plans to meet on Tuesday were set back by a huge snowstorm in the northeast.

It'll be their first face to face meeting, and although no agreements are expected, there's a long list of topics up for discussion including NATO, the fight against terrorism, Afghanistan and North Korea.

Trump Stands By Wiretapping Claim as Senate Panel Rejects It

The chair of a US Senate Committee has said there are no indications that Donald Trump was under government surveillance before or after the recent election.

Republican Richard Burr's statement comes after a recent claim by Mr. Trump that his predecessor wiretapped the phones at Trump Tower during the campaign.

But in a feisty briefing with reporters in Washington, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Mr. Trump stands by his allegations:

Northern Ireland's political party Sinn Fein asks US Congress for support to remain in EU

Foreign aid cut under Trump's first budget

The United States is going to slash its spending on foreign development and aid under President Trump's first budget.

The budget will include big increases in expenditure for the US military and for homeland security, but at the cost of social programmes at home and overseas.

President Trump's budget director Mick Mulvaney told reporters that despite humanitarian crises around the world, foreign aid would be cut significantly.

Trump to appeal to higher courts in attempt to get travel ban

American President Donald Trump is going to continue to fight to ban migrants from specific predominantly Muslim countries despite a series of court rejections of his executive orders on the issue.

Courts have now rejected two Trump travel bans, saying they discriminate against specific religious groups.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer has told reporters that President Trump will appeal to higher courts. He said the law was clear that the president does have the power to block migrants in cases of national security.

The US has said North Korea's nuclear programme is an escalating
threat and needs a new approach from the international community.

US Tech Group Calls for Int'l Pressure on China Trade Policies

A US technology group is calling for international pressure to force China to reset its industrial policies.

Former US National Security Adviser paid by Russian organisations


There have been more embarrassing revelations for the Trump administration about the work disgraced national security adviser Mike Flynn did for foreign governments.
A Congressional committee has found out that Mr Flynn received tens of thousands of dollars from various Russian organisations, as well as working for a Turkish company.

Kofi Annan calls for probe into Rakhine human rights abuses, access for aid workers, journalists

A United Nations commission, chaired by former Secretary General Kofi Annan, has called for an investigation into reports of human rights abuses in Myanmar's Rakhine state.


The panel has also asked the Myanmar government to allow aid workers and journalists access to northern Rakhine, where the conflict between Rakhine Buddhists and Muslim Rohingyas has intensified.
