Republicans scramble to contain Russia scandal engulfing Trump administration

Top Republican lawmakers are scrambling to deflect accusations that the U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions perjured himself by failing to reveal the extent of his contact with the Russian Ambassador to Washington, during the presidential election campaign.

House Leader Paul Ryan admitted that Russia tried to interfere in the U.S. election, but insisted there was no evidence that an American had colluded.

Ignoring calls for Jeff Sessions to step aside, Paul Ryan insisted lawmakers meet with ambassadors ' all the time', and the Attorney General should recuse himself only if he becomes the subject of an investigation.

Top Democrats lead chorus of calls for Sessions to resign over Russia scandal

Calls are mounting for U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign, for failing to disclose meetings with the Russian ambassador to Washington, while acting as a Trump surrogate and adviser during his election campaign.

Top Democrats have slammed the Trump administration for hiding the truth over its alleged contact with the Russian government last year.

The White House has dismissed reports in the U.S. media that Jeff Sessions met with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak twice in 2016, at the same time that US intelligence officials were investigating Russian interference in the presidential election.

In a scandal that is now engulfing the White House, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi accused the Trump administration of lying:

Schumer calls for Sessions to resign

Leading Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer has called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign, after it came to light he had lied under oath about having contacts with Russia during Donald Trump's campaign for president.

And in the meantime, he said the US inspector general, who was appointed under President Obama, should probe Jeff Sessions' own actions with regard to the investigation so far.

Former Senator Sessions spoke with the Russian ambassador at least twice over the course of the past year, including in a private conversation in September.
