LSE, DEUTSCHE MERGER IN DOUBT

The proposed merger between the London Stock Exchange and Deutsche Boerse is in doubt with the LSE saying it believes the deal is unlikely to be approved by the European Commission.

The 29 billion euro tie-up was designed to create a trading operation that could compete better against major American rivals.

Russia hopeful for Syrian opposition unity

Russia says it's hopeful that Syrian opposition groups will form a unified group at peace talks in Geneva.

The country's Deputy Foreign Minister is reported to want Kurdish representatives to be part of a joint delegation.

Armenia and Azerbaijan urged to step back from fighting after weekend violence

European and US officials are calling on Armenia and Azerbaijan to step back from fighting as fresh conflict has broken out in Europe's oldest ongoing war.

The two countries have been in conflict since 1988 when an Armenian enclave of Azerbaijan voted to join Armenia.

EU and NATO Push Macedonian Leader to Allow Opposition Government

Fears mastermind will never be found on 2-year anniversary of Boris Nemtsov's murder

27th February marks a 2-year anniversary since Russian opposition politician, Boris Nemtsov, was gunned down in central Moscow.  Five men are currently on trial for his killing, they deny the charges.  Boris Nemtsov's relatives say they fear the mastermind of the murder will never be found.  Julia Lyubova reports from Moscow.

MOONLIGHT WINS OSCAR AFTER MIX-UP

Moonlight has won best picture at the Oscars after an initial mix-up which saw La La Land announced as the winner.

Musical La La land did take home six other awards including best director for Damien Chazelle and best actress for Emma Stone.

Casey Affleck won best actor for Manchester by the Sea.

89th Academy Awards end with Best Picture mix-up

It was a plot twist worthy of the Hollywood setting...

The hours long, 89th Oscars ceremony will be remembered for the final 30 seconds when Actor Warren Beatty presented "La La Land" with the win for best picture before the film's producers were informed that in fact "Moonlight" was the true winner.  

The cast of "Moonlight" were then rushed onstage in scenes of confusion and embarrassment....

89th Academy Awards held in Los Angeles

La La Land is a favourite to win with 14 nominations. The film,

Amid tsunami of leaks, White House forced to undergo "phone check"

Staff at the White House have been subjected to a random search of their cellphones as President Trump's press secretary tries to stem the flow of leaks from inside the administration.


Sean Spicer ordered his staff to let White House lawyers check their phones, after a series of embarrassing leaks portrayed the White House in chaos.

US urges Russia to observe ceasefire after attacks on Ukraine monitors

The U.S. State Department is urging Moscow to comply with the cease-fire after a group of OSCE monitors were attacked in Ukraine.

Russian human rights campaigner released from jail

UK Terror Threat 'Same Mindset' as IRA 40 years ago

The UK's  independent reviewer of terrorism laws has said the country is facing a level of terror threat not seen since the 1970s IRA attacks.

Oscars ceremony “most political” yet

The 89th Academy Awards, is being held in Los Angeles this weekend.
(NB: Sunday 26th February)

The film, La La Land, has 14 nominations and is favourite to win the
Oscar for best picture. Moonlight is also a strong contender with
eight nominations.

But some have said this could be the "most political" year yet - with
some directors and actors boycotting the ceremony in protest over
President Donald Trump's policies.

Pres. Trump meets Peruvian Pres.

U.S. President Donald Trump has met his first leader from Latin America, hosting President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski of Peru for meetings in the Oval Office.

Earlier this week, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Homeland Security Secrertary John Kelly met with Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto privately, in part because an earlier planned meeting with President Trump fell apart.

Ignoring reporter's questions about the Trump administration, the American president brought up a different problem.

US Attorney General overturns Obama administration move to reduce private prisons
