Guatemala's army stops Dutch ship that offers abortions

Guatemala's army has stopped a Dutch ship offering abortion services from entering the country. 

The ship is part of the "Women on Waves" non-profit project, which travels to countries where abortion is llegal, and offers the procedure on international waters.

White House rejects allegations it ordered FBI to knock down Trump-Russia stories

The FBI rejected a White House request to publicly discredit media reports about alleged contacts between the Trump campaign and Russian officials during the election, according to US officials.

The White House said the request was only made after the FBI indicated it did not believe the reporting to be accurate.

The request came as US intelligence agencies were investigating attempts by Russia to intefere in the US election.

Over 100 Turkish diplomats seek asylum in Germany

Over a hundred Turks with diplomatic passports have applied for asylum in Germany since the failed coup attempt in Turkey last summer.

UK opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn says he won't quit, despite his Labour Party losing a key by-election to the Conservatives.

The win by the governing Conservatives in Copeland is in an area the Labour Party has represented for over 80 years.

Labour did win the second by-election taking place in Stoke.

But national polls continue to show Jeremy Corbyn's Labour trailing Theresa May's Conservatives by a wide margin.

RBS posts ninth consecutive loss

The Royal Bank of Scotland, which is 72% owned by the British taxpayer, has reported an annual loss of almost 9 billion dollars.


The bank says it has been hit by billions of dollars of costs associated with litigation and restructuriong.

Trump Calls For US To Expand Nuclear Arsenal Ahead of CPAC Speech

US President Donald Trump has said that the US has 'fallen behind' in its nuclear weapons capability and he wants to ensure the country's arsenal is, as he put it, 'at the top of the pack'.

Mr. Trump made the comments in an interview to the Reuters News Agency, ahead of a speech to a conservative political conference just outside Washington DC on Friday.

Iraqi Forces Capture Mosul Airport From Islamic State

US backed Iraqi security forces have re-captured Mosul airport from the so-called Islamic State group.

The troops are reported to have gained ground in outlying areas to the south of Iraq's second largest city, since launching a new phase of a four month long offensive to retake it from the militants.

But the UN is warning thousands of civilians could be displaced, as our correspondent at UN headquarters in New York Liling Tan reports.

WH PRESS: Transgender Bathroom guideline 'state issue' not federal

President Trump's plan to scrap guidelines which allow transgender students to use bathrooms based on the gender with which they identify continues to ignite debate.

In a Thursday briefing White House spokesman Sean Spicer insisted it was a "states' rights issue" insisting that the original guidance put out by the Obama administration were flawed.

White House walks back Trump comments on nuclear arsenal

The White House is already walking back comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump on expanding the American nuclear weapons arsenal.

U.S. President Donald Trump is promising to use the full force of the American government to stop human trafficking.

Globally, the International Labor Organization estimates that there are 4.5 million people trapped in forced sexual exploitation globally and the U.S. State Department issues an annual report on human trafficking.

US Top Diplomats met with Mexican counterparts

At a joint press conference in Mexico City, US Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly said that there would be no mass deportations, and no use of the US military in the process of removing undocumented immigrants. 

His words came after Secretary Kelly and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson met with Mexico's foreign minister and defense chief on Wednesday, and ahead of a meeting with President Pena Nieto on Thursday evening.

Their visit comes after Washington announced it would deport many undocumented immigrants to Mexico if they had entered the United States across the US-Mexico border, even if they are not Mexican.


Ahead of meetings, Mexican officials said that Mexico would not accept unilateral decisions imposed on their country by the US.

Peace talks on Syria are set to continue later [Friday].

UN mediators in Geneva are hoping the sides in the conflict will agree to face-to-face discussions during the latest round of negotiations on a constitution and elections.

US: Last protestors leave encampment before construction of Dakota Access Pipeline
