UN Warns Of Civilian Danger As Mosul Offensive Continues

Iraqi forces, backed by the US, have launched a ground offensive to retake the western part of the city of Mosul from the so-called Islamic State.

They're reported to be within striking distance of the city's airport, but the United Nations sys it's concerned about civilians becoming trapped in the area.

Trump Clarifies Sweden Remark By Citing Fox News Report (Wrap)

Donald Trump has said his remarks about Sweden during a rally in Florida on Saturday were referring to a report he saw on Fox News about immigration in the country.

The US President had appeared to reference a terrorist attack in Sweden on Friday night, despite none having occurred, leading the country's Washington embassy to seek clarification from the State Department.

The White House Chief of Staff has defended Donald Trump's hostile attitude to the US media.

UN says NOT backing away from discussing political transition at Syria talks


The United Nations says it is NOT stepping back from talk of a political transition in next week's Syria peace negotiations in Geneva, contrary to news reports saying it was shying away from the divisive topic.
The office for the special envoy to Syria tells our UN correspondent that the transition remains very much a part of the agenda, in line with the UN resolution on the peace process.

President Trump appeals to base after a bad week in Washington

American President Donald Trump tried to put a bad week behind him on Friday, visiting a Boeing aircraft plant to reinforce his campaign promise to boost domestic jobs.

Amid allegations of improper contacts with Russia and problems building a cabinet, Mr Trump got out of Washington to attend a ceremony in South Carolina to unveil the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner, 

Trying to appeal to the base that elected him, Mr Trump pledged to use his power to force companies to buy American and hire American, with a threat to those that did not.

Tillerson Calms Allies On Syria Ahead of Geneva Talks

Western diplomats say that US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told them, on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Germany, that Washington isn't leaning towards Moscow over the conflict in Syria.

Mr. Tillerson told US allies that Washington backs UN efforts to broker a political solution.

Unilever Rejects Kraft Heinz Deal

Household goods maker Unilever has rejected a takeover bid from US firm Kraft Heinz, worth 143 billion dollars.


It would have been one of the biggest corporate deals in history, but Kraft has indicated it will continue to strive for a takeover.

White House denies plans to use national guard to deport migrants

Donald Trump's administration is reportedly considering a proposal to mobilise as many as one hundred thousand national guard troops to round up unauthorised immigrants.

A draft memo obtained by the Associated Press calls for the militirisation of immigration forces in eleven states - some in the far north of America.
