First black box from Black Sea crash found

LEAD:

Russia has found the first black box from a military plane that crashed into the Black Sea killing all 92 on board on Sunday.  The recorder, one of several reported to be on board, contains information that could help investigators identify the cause of the crash, which killed dozens of Red Army Choir singers and dancers en route to Syria to entertain Russian troops in the run-up to the New Year, as well as a member of an NGO and nine journalists. Returned gifts give brick and mortar businesses edge over online retailers

Christmas Day has been and gone but brick and mortar retailers in the
United States are still hoping to cash in on the holiday season.

Online shopping is becoming increasingly popular but traditional
retailers are hoping to capitalize on the huge numbers of people
coming to their stores to return gifts.

Shinzo Abe visits Pearl Harbor

The Japanese Prime Minister is visiting Hawaii in an historic trip
that will see him give prayers for the victims at Pearl Harbor.

Chile: Tsunami alert lifted

Chilean authorities have lifted a tsunami warning after a major earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck the southern part of the Chile on Christmas day. 

Chile's National Emergency Services said that approximately 4,000 people had evacuated the Los Lagos coastal areas after the queake.

Carrie Fisher in 'stable' condition

Star Wars actress and author Carrie Fisher is in 'stable' condition, according to a social media post by her mother, actress Debbie Reynolds.

Fresh offensive expected in Mosul

According to Reuters forces in Iraq are preparing for a fresh assault
on the city of Mosul in a bid to purge the so-called Islamic State.

Authorities tell Donald Trump he cannot close charitable foundation

American President-elect Donald Trump is facing more scrutiny over his financial dealings.
Mr Trump has announced he's closing his charitable foundation, but as our North America correspondent John Clarke reports, New York authorities say he can't do that because it's under investigation.

Israel PM summons US ambassador

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has summoned U.S. Ambassador Danny Shaprio for a meeting, following the U.S. abstaining from a key vote on a resolution at the U.N. Security Council.

That resolution criticises Israel for it's continuing policy of building settlements on what is probably Palestinian land, and it's the first time the U.S. did not veto such a resolution.

In an interview with the Fox News Channel, David Keyes, a spokesman for the Israeli Prime Minister, expressed the government's view.

GEORGE MICHAEL DEAD AT 53

British pop star George Michael has died at the age of 53.
 
His publicist says he died 'peacefully' at his home in Oxfordshire in the south of England.

George Michael was known for hits such as Last Christmas, Club Tropicana and Faith - and was involved in the original Band Aid Christmas record.

UN approves resolution demanding end to Israeli settlements

The United Nations Security Council has approved a resolution
demanding Israel stop settlement building.

Long-time Israeli the United States abstained from the vote but did
not veto it.

The US decision was in defiance to appeals from the Israeli government
and US President-elect Donald Trump to block the proposal.

US abstains from UN vote on Israeli settlements

The United States did not vote for or against the resolution before the United Nations Security Council on condemning Israeli settlements policy.

While Republicans condemn the decision as shameful, the Obama adminstration notes that Israel's founding was for historic reasons and this ally has always been treated differently.

Investigation underway in Malta following Libyan plane hijacking

Maltese officials are questioning the suspects and everyone on board the Afriqiyah Airways plane as law enforcement searches the Airbus jet following an attempted hijacking.

The plane was diverted to Malta after two men tried to take control of the plane.

US imposes more sanctions against Syria

The Obama administration has imposed additional sanctions against 18 individuals and 5 entities in hopes of undermining the financial support for the civil war in Syria.

Merkel wants changes to laws after attacks

Germany's chancellor Angela Merkel responded to the death of the suspect in the Berlin truck attack by saying her country would look at changes to certain laws.

The 24 year-old Tunisian man Anis Amir was killed by Italian police a few days after the attack.
