Venezuela Closes Border with Colombia for 72 Hours

Venezuela has closed its border with Colombia for 72 hours. 

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro says the closure is part of his plan to fix the economic crisis in his country.

Iran Starting Work on Nuclear-Powered Ships

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani has ordered the head of his country's Atomic Energy Organization to start planning the development of nuclear powered ships.  

Rouhani says this is in response to what he calls a U.S. violation of the landmark nuclear deal Iran signed with world powers.

UN appoints New Zealand MP Shearer to head South Sudan Peacekeeping Mission

Senior Republicans question Trump's secretary of state pick

Senior Republican senators have questioned Donald Trump's choice of Rex Tillerson to be America's next secretary of state.

Senator Marco Rubio says he has "serious concerns" about the Exxon-Mobil boss, who has very close ties with Russia.

Mr Tillerson's nomination must be approved by the US Senate.

UK Foreign Sec Johnson: Aleppo aid drops "impossible" without Russia permission

The British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson says Russia and Syria must put in place an immediate ceasefire in Aleppo...

The UN says dozens of civilians, including women and children, have been "shot on the spot" by forces loyal to the Syrian government.

In an emergency debate in the UK's House of Commons, Mr Johnson said it would be impossible for the UK to provide aid drops over Aleppo without the permission of Russia.

Uganda King Charged with Terrorism

A court in Uganda has remanded King Wesley Mumbere to prison after fresh charges including terrorism were brought against him.

The traditional leader was arrested last month following clashes at his palace in Western Uganda where more than 60 people were killed.

Italian court jails Tunisian boat captain for role in 700 migrant deaths

An Italian court has jailed a Tunisian man for 18 years - saying he was the captain of a migrant boat that sank in April 2015, killing 700 people.
Mohammed Ali Malek's lawyers said a smuggling gang had forced him to pilot the boat.

Donald Trump picks Rex Tillerson for Secretary of State

US President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Exxon-Mobil boss Rex Tillerson to be his secretary of state.

Mr Tillerson's close relationship to Russian President Vladimir Putin is likely to come under close scrutiny.

Mr Trump said 64-year-old Tillerson was among the "most accomplished business leaders and international dealmakers" in the world.

UN calls for safe passage for civilians amidst Aleppo carnage

The United Nations says Syrian pro-government forces have been shooting civilians  in Aleppo "on the spot", describing the situation there as a "complete meltdown of humanity". 

Forces loyal to Syria's leader Bashar al Assad, backed by Russia, have recaptured large areas on the besieged city of Aleppo in recent days.   It's understood thousands of civilians are trapped inside buildings in the last remaining rebel-held areas .   

The UN and aid charities are urging the Syrian government to allow safe passage out for those remaining in the city. 

Spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Rupert Coleville says at least 82 civilians have been killed by pro-government forces.

New report warns UK government to have transitional Brexit "game plan"


British government ministers have been warned they must have what's been described as a "clear game plan" for a transitional arrangement for Brexit, as Britain prepares to negotiate with the European Union on leaving the bloc. 

A committee of the House of Lords is warning an interim deal would save UK firms from stiff tariffs and other trade barriers if a complete agreement is not reached in the two year deadline.  From London, Catherine Drew reports.

Trump Appoints Goldman Sachs President As Advisor, Postpones Business Press Conference

Donald Trump has chosen the President of Goldman Sachs to be his top economic advisor.

The President Elect named Gary Cohn as director of the National Economic Council, despite repeatedly criticising the firm during his campaign.
