Merkel calls for burka ban, tougher approach to asylum

German chancellor Angela Merkel said the situation in twenty fifteen when almost a million migrants arrived to Germany must not be repeated. 

A tougher approach to migration was a key part of her message at her party's official conference ahead of next year's federal elections.

Ongwen pleads not guilty to war crimes and crimes against humanity charges at the ICC

Dominic Ongwen - one of Joseph Kony's top commanders in the Lords Resistance army - has plead not guilty to 70 counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes at the International Criminal Court.

The charges range from rape  to murder and enlisting child solider for his part in the LRA's 3 decades of war in Northern Uganda and across central Africa - resulting in over 100 thousand deaths.

Supreme Court Brexit Appeal Day 2


It's day two of a legal appeal at the UK's Supreme Court, over how Brexit must be authorised.


The Government is arguing against a High Court decision last month which found that Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty - which would begin Brexit negotiations - had to be triggered by a vote in Parliament, and not by the Prime Minster.

MAY 'AMBITIOUS' OVER BREXIT DEAL

UK Prime Minister Theresa May says she's 'ambitious' about striking a Brexit deal and can secure 'best possible terms' when it comes to access to the European single market.

She's been speaking in Bahrain, where she's on a two day visit.

It comes as the UK's Supreme Court continues hearings on whether parliament must be consulted when the government triggers Article 50 to start formal Brexit negotiations.

Russia and US to hold talks on Aleppo withdrawal

Russia's Foreign Minister said talks with the United States on the withdrawal of rebels from Eastern Aleppo could begin in Geneva as early as Tuesday evening. On Monday Russia has blocked a UN Security Council resolution on Syrian ceasefire dismissing it as counterproductive. The US led coalition is concerned the quick advance of Bashar al-Assad's forces on Aleppo may become a major defeat for the groups who have fought for years to topple the Syrian leader. LRA commander Ongwen goes on trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity at the ICC

UN seeks record $22.2 billion in aid funding for 2017

Mistrial Declared in Shooting of Unarmed South Carolina Man

A South Carolina judge has declared a mistrial in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man  by a former white policeman. 

The  incident  in  April 2015  was caught on cellphone video and reignited the debate on race and policing in the US.

Criminal Investigation Opened in Oakland Warehouse Fire

Officials have opened a criminal inquiry into the devastating fire at a warehouse party in Oakland California this weekend. 
Thirty six people are now confirmed dead, and investigators have only been able to examine a fraction of the building's charred remains.

US oil firms criticize US Army Engineers decision to halt Dakota Access Pipeline

Brazilians protest against corruption

Thousands of people took to the streets across Brazil over the weekend to denounce corruption in Congress. 

Protesters are concerned about legislators passing amendments to a landmark anti-corruption bill, which they say are aimed at intimidating the judges and prosecutors who are leading the investigation into government corruption.

UK SUPREME COURT STARTS BREXIT HEARINGS

Britain's government argued Parliament doesn't need to be futher consulted on trigger Brexit - in day one of a key court hearing in London.

The case is being heard by the country's highest court - the Supreme Court.

UN voting on Aleppo truce

Japanese PM Abe to visit Pearl Harbour

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he will visit Pearl Harbor this month to "console the souls" of the victims of Japan's attack there 75 years ago.

Abe will be the first serving Japanese prime minister to visit the naval base in Hawaii. Earlier this year, Barack Obama became the first sitting US president to visit the site of the US Hiroshima bomb attack.
