China angered by UN human rights chief attendance at award event for jailed Uighur activist

China is protesting the attendance of the United Nations human rights chief at an award ceremony celebrating the work of a prominent Chinese activist.

The human rights chief Zied Ra'ad al Hussein was at the event in Geneva, where Ilham Tohti received an award for his advocacy for the Muslim Uighur people.

Brazil: Rio Security Chief Steps Down


Rio de Janeiro state's security secretary Jose Mariano Beltrame has resigned, after violence between police officers and drug traffickers broke out in two of the city's slums earlier this week.

US and Russian foreign ministers to hold Syria talks on Saturday

Accused NY bomber set to be arraigned Thursday

Samsung Slashes Quarterly Profit Estimate After Galaxy Note Failure

Samsung has cut its quarterly profit estimate by a third, after taking a 2.3 billion dollar hit from the failure of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone.

Russian Olympic chief to step down

SAMSUNG SHARES SLUMP AGAIN

Samsung shares have fallen further in Wednesday trading after the company decided to stop producing its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone.

The device has been scrapped after reports that replacement phones had been overheating and smoking.

Colombia to Negotiate with National Liberation Army

The Colombian government and the country’s second largest rebel group, the National Liberation Army, have announced the beginning of formal peace talks. 
The negotiations with the 2000 strong National Liberation Army — known as the ELN, will begin in Ecuador, according to an agreement signed in Caracas by both sides under the auspices of Venezuela’s government.

Hillary Clinton and Al Gore Campaign Together On Climate Change in Florida

Al Gore has been campaigning for US Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in Florida.

The former US Vice President and Nobel Peace Prize winner spoke to an audience at Miami Dade College, focusing on the issue of climate change, and the importance of turning out to vote.

President Obama Details Public Private Partnerships to Send People to Mars
