Samsung Slashes Quarterly Profit Estimate After Galaxy Note Failure

Samsung has cut its quarterly profit estimate by a third, after taking a 2.3 billion dollar hit from the failure of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone.

There's been a global recall and weeks of mounting problems for the product, after reports that its batteries were catching fire, and even replacement phones experienced the same problem.

Russian Olympic chief to step down

The head of the Russian Olympic Committee intends to step down. Alexander Zhukov, who is a first deputy speaker of the Russian lower house of parliament, intends to focus on his parliamentary work.  His departure is not officially linked to the doping scandal but the Russian President has ordered a reform at the Ministry of Sport. Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May says the government is working to secure the "best possible access" to the EU single market as part of its Brexit negotiations...

SAMSUNG SHARES SLUMP AGAIN

Samsung shares have fallen further in Wednesday trading after the company decided to stop producing its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone.

The device has been scrapped after reports that replacement phones had been overheating and smoking.

Samsung stock had already slumped 8% on Tuesday.

Colombia to Negotiate with National Liberation Army

The Colombian government and the country’s second largest rebel group, the National Liberation Army, have announced the beginning of formal peace talks. 
The negotiations with the 2000 strong National Liberation Army — known as the ELN, will begin in Ecuador, according to an agreement signed in Caracas by both sides under the auspices of Venezuela’s government.

Hillary Clinton and Al Gore Campaign Together On Climate Change in Florida

Al Gore has been campaigning for US Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in Florida.

The former US Vice President and Nobel Peace Prize winner spoke to an audience at Miami Dade College, focusing on the issue of climate change, and the importance of turning out to vote.

He famously lost the 2000 election, after his Republican rival George W Bush won the Sunshine State by just 537 votes - so told the crowd that their ballots mattered.

New Report Says ISIS Media Output Falling

A study by US terrorism researchers at West Point shows that the Islamic State's propaganda output has fallen dramatically, as the group comes under increasing military pressure.
