More than 100 dead in Haiti following Hurricane Matthew

Haiti's interior minister says Hurricane Matthew has left more than 100 dead in the interior of the country.

The massive storm is strengthening as it approaches Florida, with state officials urging citizens to flee the coastal regions.

At the White House, spokesman Josh Earnest talked about President Obama's top concern.

Investigation continues into possible hoarding of classified documents by NSA contractor

The investigation is continuing into Harold T. Martin, a Booz Allen Hamilton contractor who was working for the National Security Agency.

He was arrested on suspicion he may have been hoarding classified documents at his home, although the New York Times reports, it is unclear if he actually leaked any of the documents.

Booz Allen Hamilton also employed Edward Snowden, the fugitive whistleblower now in Moscow, who did download and then release classified documents.

At the White House, spokesman Josh Earnest said this case illustrates that lessons should be learned.

Florida residents prepare for powerful hurricane

Hurricane Matthew is gaining strength as churns across the Bahamas towards the US coast.

The storm is expected to make landfall in Florida early on Friday morning with winds of around 130 miles per hour [200 kph].

More than two million people in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina are being told to evacuate.

Security Council Unanimously Backs Guterres To Be Next UN chief

The United Nations Security Council has unanimously backed the former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres to become the next UN Secretary General. 

In a closed-door meeting at UN headquarters in New York, the 15 Council members adopted a resolution formally presenting the 67 year old as their choice for the top job to the General Assembly. 

Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin announced that they'll recommend that Mr. Guterres serve a five year term starting on 1st January 2017. 

Asked what he'd say to those disappointed that a female candidate didn't win, Ambassador Churkin defended the selected process:

IMF defends globalist policies, warns against protectionism

IMF chief Christine Lagarde has launched a staunch defence of globalisation and warned against the rise of protectionist politics in Europe and the United States.

Philippines Foreign Minister supports Duterte

UK Approves Fracking Test Application


The British Government has given the go-ahead for fracking tests to take place at a site in the north of England, while the decision to grant permission for a second site in the same area has yet to be decided.

New study finds third Heathrow runway would not break pollution laws

An independent study has found that a third runway could be built at Britain's biggest airport, Heathrow, without breaking European pollution laws.  

The study led by the University of Cambridge said the general pollution levels will drop as fumes emanating from the airport will be counteracted by reduced pollution from the wider area.   From London, Catherine Drew reports.

Suspected Al Shabaab Kill Six in Northern Kenya

In north-eastern Kenya, suspected Al shabaab militants have reportedly killed six people.

The attack took place at a public workshop located at Madera, a town that borders Somalia.

Kenyan security officials say the assailants used explosives to access the public building. 

The suspected Al shabaab militants then opened fire killing six people instantly.

The regional governor says 27 other people at the site were saved as security guards intervened 

Madera town where the incident took place has been under frequent attacks from al shabaab, because it's less than a kilometer away from the Somali border.

Local media in Kenya say non-locals were the target. 

Kenyan forces are battling Al shabaab militants in Somalia, and have faced repeated retaliatory attacks on Kenyan soil.

The European Union's new coastguard and border force is starting its first operations in tackling the refugee and migrant crisis.

Hurricane Matthew moves closer to US coast

Hurricane Matthew is moving across the Bahamas after killing 17 people in the Caribbean.

The storm has already battered Haiti and Cuba and is expected to reach the US coastline by late Thursday.

Matthew is a major hurricane, packing winds of nearly 200 kilometers per hour.
