United Nations Security Council meets on Syria

The United Nations Security Council has convened in the hope of
reviving the cessation of hostilities in Syria.

A recent attack on an aid convoy has threatened to derail the peace
process and has exposed divides between the US and Russia who worked
together to implement the peace plan.

President Barack Obama is encouraging the US to begin negotiating reciprocal trade agreements with African nations.

Police say Man was Armed in Charlotte Shooting as Black Leaders Call for Boycott

The police chief in the US city of Charlotte, North Carolina says a man who was shot and killed was armed and refused to put his weapon  down.

This account contrasts with that of Keith Lamont Scott's family who say he was reading a book as he was approached.

His death has led to overnight violent protests in the city and a call by black leaders for a financial boycott of their own city.

Kerry calls for no-fly zone in Syria

US Secretary of State John Kerry is calling for the immediate creation of a no-fly zone in Syria, after Monday's deadly attack on a UN humanitarian aid convoy.


Mr. Kerry told the United Nations it's the only remaining option in a bid to breathe new life into a failed ceasefire in Syria.

Brazil: Former President Lula da Silva to go on trial for corruption

A judge in Brazil has ruled that former President, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, will go to trial over corruption and money laundering charges. 

Brazilian prosecutors say Mr. Lula received over one million dollars in bribes connected to a scheme at state oil company Petrobras.

Voting closes in Labour leadership ballot

Protesters clash with police in Charlotte after shooting of black man

The US city of Charlotte, North Carolina has returned to calm today after twelve police officers were injured during protests over the police shooting of a black man.

Police cars were destroyed and one officer was hit in the face with a rock, according to officials.

Elsewhere, police in the city of Tulsa, in Oklahoma, said a black man they'd killed on Friday was unarmed.

UN hold special Syria meeting

The United Nations is holding a special meeting on Syria, attended by
the Security Council's foreign ministers.

It's an attempt to find a path forward, just days after the most
recent ceasefire collapsed.

The meeting is being held during the UN General Assembly to draw
attention to the situation in the country that has faced more than
five years of civil war.

But Richard Gowan, Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations
says the meeting on Syria is unlikely to help stop the fighting.

One US Pilot Dies, Another Injured in U-2 Spy Plane Crash

One American pilot was killed and another injured when they ejected
from a U-2 spy plane shortly before it crashed in Northern California
on Tuesday morning. A seasoned instructor and another pilot from from
Beale Air Force Base were participating in a training mission when the
incident occurred. A commander at Beale said he would match the safety
record of a U-2 with any other aircraft the Air Force flies and this
won't deter future missions.

US officials accuse Russia of bombing aid convoy

U.S. officials are accusing Russia of bombing the aid convoy which was en route to Aleppo.

Rahami Charged with NY and NJ Bombings

The man whom US authorities believe planted bombs in New York and New Jersey over the weekend has been charged with the use of weapons of mass destruction, and bombing a place of public use.

UN Ban Ki Moon Condemns Attack on Aid Truck in Syria at General Assembly Speech

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon called the attack on a UN
aid convoy in Syria, "savage". He gave these remarks during his final
address to world leaders at the UN General Assembly.

The UN has confirmed that 20 people were killed in the attack.
