US defends chemical weapons approach towards Syria

The Obama administration is defending its response to Syria's use of chemical weapons, despite a UN report concluding that the Assad regime has used chlorine gas to attack civilians.

President Obama had previously said any use of chemical weapons would be a red line for the US, and Washington has been criticized for not taking stronger action when such weapons have been used.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters that Assad's use of chlorine on civilians was immoral and deserved international condemnation. But he said the US and its allies have had some success in forcing Assad to acknowledge and destroy even worse weapons.
