French armed police patrol cross-Channel ferries

French armed police have been deployed on cross Channel ferries - as both France and the U.K. remain on high alert for a possible terror attack.
Marine police patrols are boarding the ferries as they enter French waters - and may soon start searching them at British ports too.

EXTRA ARMED POLICE DEPLOYED IN LONDON

Extra armed police are being deployed to the streets of London after recent terror attacks in Europe.

They'll be stationed at busy locations and well-known landmarks to reassure the public and also deter would-be attackers.

London's Metropolitan Police has been increasing the number of armed officers it has available up to nearly 3000.

The UK's terror threat level is at 'severe' which means an attack is thought to be 'highly likely'.

Met Police chief Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe says extra armed police is a sensible response to recent events.

IOC approves Executive Board's stance on Russia competing in the Olympics

LEAD:


The 129th Session of the International Olympic Committee got underway in Rio de Janeiro.  IOC President Thomas Bach used his opening speech to defend his organisation's handling of the Russian doping crisis that has rocked the world of sport.  However, the IOC stood by its decision to apply a strict criteria on Russian sportspeople. FAA Grants Virgin Galactic License To Fly

Richard Branson's space tourism venture Virgin Galactic made a giant
leap in the race to get tourists to space. It was awarded an operating
license from the Federal Aviation Administration for its SpaceShipTwo
aircraft Monday, giving the company government clearance to fly when
they feel it is safe to do so.

Venezuelan Opposition Leaders Pressure Electoral Board

The Venezuelan opposition putting pressure on the country’s Electoral Board to  move forward with the next steps to recall President Nicolas Maduro. 

On Monday the Board confirmed enough signatures on the recall petition had been validated, but the Board did not set a date for the next step of the lengthy recall process.

30 victims reported in suspected chlorine gas attack in Syria

Barrel bombs full of chlorine gas are suspected in an attack on a town in Idlib province Syria.

A doctor in the town confirmed 28 cases of chlorine gas poisoning, saying it's happened before and he's familiar with the symptoms

At the United Nations, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he was "deeply disturbed by the ongoing destruction," particularly of medical facilities in Syria.

US Military Strikes Kill al-Qaeda Operatives in Yemen

The United States military has revealed it carried out two strikes in Yemen last month which killed seven al-Qaeda operatives.

A Pentagon spokesman told reporters al-Qaeda is using the unrest in Yemen to provide a haven for planning future attacks.

Bolivia: police seize 7.5 tons of cocaine

Bolivian authorities have intercepted a truck that was carrying 7.5 tons of cocaine, and thought to be headed to the United States. 

Government officials say that three men have been arrested in the case.

Pres. Obama promises to keep fighting for Asian trade deal

U.S. President Barack Obama is promising to continue to fight for the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

He made the promise during a press conference with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien-Loong.

The Prime Minister said earlier, failure to enact the TPP would hurt America's credibility.

Anthrax outbreak affects dozens in Russia's Siberia

FBI Employee Pleads Guilty to Acting As Chinese Agent

An electronics technician for the FBI has pleaded guilty to acting as an 'agent of the Chinese government'.

Kun Shan Chun, also known as Joey Chun, admitted to a federal court in Manhattan that he passed sensitive information to a Chinese official.
