Russian National Team departs for Rio

LEAD:


Members of the Russian National Team have left Moscow for Rio to take part in the Olympic Games.  The departure comes after the IOC offered Russian athletes a lifeline by ruling that decisions on individual competitors will be left to individual international sports federation. President Obama urges voters to back Hillary Clinton

President Barack Obama has implored American voters to "reject cynicism" and elect Hillary Clinton as the next US president.

Speaking at the Democratic Convention in Philadelphia, President Obama tried to paint a positive vision of America in stark contrast to the problems highlighted by Republican nominee Donald Trump.

Obama said the Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton has the necessary experience to be president. 


Obama also praised the efforts of Bernie Sanders' voters, and said all democrats should match their enthusiasm in the general election.


Obama dismissed Donald Trump's chances of becoming president.

Vice-President Joe Biden has delivered a swift rebuke of Donald Trump's credibility for president of the United States.

In a passionate speech that wowed the crowd at the Democratic convention in Philadelphia, the Vice-President said the Republican nominee "had no clue".

Cardinal George Pell denies "groping"allegations from the late 1970s

Australia's most senior Catholic cleric Cardinal George Pell has for a second time called for an investigation into Victoria Police to determine whether there has been a "conspiracy to pervert the course of justice".
The demand follows a report aired on Australia's ABC on Wednesday night carrying allegations of inappropriate behaviour in the late 70s.

New York welcomes the bloom of the rare 'corpse' flower

Gardens to witness the 36-hour bloom of the rare corpse flower.

While the corpse flower can have a lifetime spanning decades, it only
shows its large, stalk-like petals once every 10 years.

US doesn't want voices of Turkish journalists silenced

Turkey has shut down dozens of media outlets, including  16 TV channels, 45 papers and 15 magazines and following the attempted coup of July 15, the government wants to detain nearly 100 journalists.

The Obama administration is pushing democratic values, saying these voices should not be silenced.

US Federal Reserve Leaves Interest Rates Unchanged

Policymakers at the Federal Reserve have left American interest rates unchanged at a quarter to a half a per cent after their two day meeting this week.

It was the first gathering of the central bank's open markets committee since the British vote to leave the European Union in June.

No comment from US State Dept on Trump & Russia

The U.S. State Department is refusing to comment on Donald Trump's call for Russia to hack into Hillary Clinton's email and find the 30,000 files she deleted as personal and not government records.

Russia is also the lead suspect into the email hacking of the Democratic party headquarters, according to U.S. intelligence officials speaking to the New York Times.

U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby would only say the FBI is investigating.

44 killed in Syrian bombing

At least 44 were killed when a huge explosion tore through the Syrian town of Qamishli.

The majority of the residents are ethnic Kurds.

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the truck bomb, which was detonated near a Kurdish security headquarters.

In Washington, U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby condemned the violence as reprehensible.

Clinton campaign calls Trump's Russia comments "national security" issue.

Hillary Clinton's campaign team is accusing Donald Trump of encouraging Russia to commit cyber espionage against the United States.


They're calling a "national security issue" after the Republican candidate urged Moscow to help find some of Mrs. Clinton's missing e-mails.

Clinton slams Trump for encouraging Russia to spy on her

Obama to speak at Democratic Convention

President Barack Obama addresses delegates at the Democratic Convention today and will encourage them to unify her behind her in the battle to defeat Donald Trump.

Donald Trump has called on Russia to hack into and release emails sent by Hillary Clinton.

The republican presidential nominee's extraordinary request came during his first press conference since his party's national convention.

Mr Trump was replying to questions over allegations Russia had hacked into the Democratic Party emails in a bid to undermine the democrats and boost the billionaire's election chances.

The real estate mogul was speaking in Florida when he called on Russia to search for 30-thousand emails sent from Clinton's private server...

Charges against the officers in the Freddie Gray case are dropped

Prosecutors in Baltimore have decided to drop all remaining charges against three Baltimore police officers who were involved in the arrest and death of Freddie Gray. 

The move closes the case without any convictions of the six officers who were originally charged.
