Cameron's last cabinet meeting "quite emotional"

Incoming British Prime Minister Theresa May has led the tributes to David Cameron during his last cabinet meeting before stepping down.    

On leaving, some ministers said the meeting had been quite emotional as they said goodbye to Mr Cameron.   From London, Catherine Drew reports.

Decision Expected on Jeremy Corbyn Ballot Rules

The UK's Labour Party will find out today whether current leader Jeremy Corbyn will be automatically allowed to defend his position as leader in the party's leadership ballot.


It comes after a leadership contest was triggered by a challenge from the former shadow business secretary Angela Eagle.

Relative calm returns to Juba after deadly fighting

Relative calm has returned to South Sudan's capital Juba after president Salva Kiir and his rival, vice-president Riek Machar, both declared cease-fires on Monday evening.  

  It comes after days of fighting which has seen the deaths of hundreds of people.

Opposition parties call for a general election as May prepares for No 10

Opposition parties in the UK are calling for a snap general election as current prime minister David Cameron prepares to hand over the top job to Home Secretary Theresa May. 

Mrs May won the leadership of the Conservative Party and therefore the role of prime minister, after challenger Andrea Leadsom withdrew from the race Monday.   The party has seen a period of bitter in-fighting following the Brexit vote to leave the European Union. 

In 2007 when Labour's Gordon Brown took over as PM from Tony Blair, Theresa May said the country should have an election to ensure Mr Brown had a mandate, however she has said there will not be an election until the next one,  due in 2020.  

Tim Farron, leader of the opposition Liberal Democrats told LBC radio it would be better to let the country judge whether Mrs May should be the next Prime Minister.

Spain and Portugal under fire from EU ministers over deficits

Spain and Portugal are being officially criticized by European Union finance ministers for not doing enough to bring down their budget deficits.

Russia and Tajikistan stage military drills

US Praises SA Investigators Over Foiled Plot on US Embassy

The US has praised the work of South African investigators who appear to have foiled a plot to attack the US Embassy.

Twin brothers have been charged in Johannesburg with a terrorism  scheme which also included an unidentified Jewish building. 

Brandon-Lee Thulsie and Tony-Lee Thulsie who are 23 years  old  also attempted to fly to Syria to fight for the Islamic State organization.

The court appearance came after a ten month investigation by the country's Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.

Venezuela-Colombia Border Closed after 35 Thousand Cross on Foot in 12 Hours

The border between Venezuela and Colombia is closed,  after it was open to pedestrians for 12 hours on Sunday. 

During that brief window, thousands of Venezuelans walked across the border to buy food and other necessities that are in short supply in their country.

Twin Brothers in South Africa Accused of Terrorism.

A court in South Africa has accused twin brothers of planning to blow up the US mission and Jewish institutions in the country.


The suspects are believed to be working on behalf of terror group ISIL.

Brandon-lee Thulsie and Tony-lee Thulsie are accused of conspiring to commit terrorism activities in Johannesburg.


The 23 year old twins face three counts related to terrorism.


The alleged crimes date back to October 2015 and July 2016.


They appeared in court briefly and were remanded in custody. They have not pleaded guilty.


The twin brothers were arrested with two others during a raid in townships near Johannesburg.


It is alleged they had planned to go to Syria to join ISIL, just before their arrest.


South African police say they have confiscated computers and mobile phones during the raids.

Illinois Police Chief Asks for Calm

Police in Illinois report a white police officer shot an African-American man in the chest while responding to a call that a man had a handgun. 
The shooting comes after a wave of weekend protests over high profile police-involved shootings of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota and the sniper killings in Dallas last week during a protest there about police violence.

The UK will have a new Prime Minister on Wednesday, with Theresa May replacing David Cameron.

The current British Home Secretary becomes Conservative Party leader after her rival in the race, Andrea Leadsom, pulled out.

Mrs Leadsom says she didn't have the support within the party to form a strong government.

Mr Cameron will formally tender his resignation to the Queen on Wednesday and Theresa May will move into the famous Number 10 Downing Street address in London.

South Sudan rocked by fifth day of fighting

Unrest continues in South Sudan's capital where rival government troops have been locked in a fifth day of violence.

A U.N base where some 30'000 people are seeking refuge has also been affected by gunfire and explosions where fighting between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and opposition forces continues.

Some 300 people have so far been killed.
