US transfers two inmates out of Guantanamo Bay prison (updated)

The United States has transferred a Yemeni and Tajik inmate to Serbia from its Guantanamo Bay prison.

President Barack Obama promised to close the prison during his first year of office, but seven years on 76 prisoners remain at the Cuban detention centre.

UN chief calls for South Sudan peace

The United Nations Secretary-General has called for calm as fighting continues in South Sudan, saying the situation is an "unfolding crisis".

He said the world's newest country had "squandered" opportunities five years after its independence.

Hundreds of people are reported to have died in four days of fighting.

Speaking at the UN in New York Ban Ki-moon condemned the latest violence.

The governments of three countries have issued warnings about travel to the United States.

US orders 'partial evacuation' South Sudan embassy staff

The US state department has ordered non-essential personnel to leave the U.S. Embassy in Juba. 

The decision is in response to ongoing violence between troops loyal to South Sudan's President Salva Kiir and those backing his deputy, Riek Machar. [PRO: re-ak ma-shar]

Some 300 people are thought to have died in the fighting.

Theresa May to become Britain's next Prime Minister on Wednesday

Britain's new Prime Minister Theresa May will succeed David Cameron at Number Ten Downing Street on Wednesday night in London.


The announcement was made after her only remaining challenger dropped out of the race for the Conservative Party leadership.


The opposition Labour Party is facing a leadership election of its own after Angela Eagle announced that she'll challenge the beleaguered opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn.


At the end of a dizzying day of developments in London, Prime Minister David Cameron said he'll move out of Downing Street on Wednesday, and Mrs. May will move in.
