IAAF vote on Russian ban

LEAD:

Russia’s sports minister has urged the world athletics chief to lift a ban that would prevent Russia from competing in the Rio Olympics. Vitaly Mutko said his country was ready to assist the World Anti-Doping Agency in testing Russian sportspeople for doping any way it could.  The Council of the International Association of Athletics Federations will meet in Vienna on Friday to decide if Russia can return to athletics having been banned since November.  Julia Lyubova reports.

Obama Meets Orlando Victims' Families, Attacks Divisive Politics

President Barack Obama has met with the families of the victims of the Orlando gay  nightclub shooting.

Omar Mateen killed 49 people with a military style automatic AR-15 weapon, 23  others remain in hospital. 

Obama poured scorn on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's argument that arming club-goers would  have helped reduce those casualties.

He also warned against politics that seeks to amplify divisions in society.

Venezuela food riots, looting turn deadly

A wave of food riots and looting in crisis hit Venezuela has turned deadly.   

Several people have been reported shot and killed in separate incidents across the country this week.

Ukraine Angered As Putin Meets Ban Ki Moon in St. Petersburg

Russian President Vladimir Putin has held talks with UN and European leaders on the sidelines of an international economic forum in St. Petersburg.

Mr. Putin met the President of the European Commission, Jean Claude Juncker, as well as UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, whom he awarded Russia's 'Order of Friendship'.

But Ukraine is outraged by Mr. Ban's behaviour towards the Kremlin, as our Moscow correspondent Lorna Shaddick reports.

McCain: Obama bears "direct responsibility" for Orlando massacre

Former US Republican Presidential candidate John McCain has said that President Obama bears "direct responsibility" for the Orlando shooting massacre.


He told reporters on Capitol Hill that the President's policies have directly led to the growth and development of Islamic State, the group to which the Orlando gunman pledged allegiance during a 3 hour standoff with police.

Slain British parliamentarian was passionate advocate for Syrian civilians and refugees

Jo Cox was elected to the British Parliament in the 2015 UK General Election.

CIA director: U.S. efforts to thwart ISIS capability have failed

A member of the British Parliament has been shot and killed by an attacker in her constituency in Yorkshire.


Jo Cox was 41, and was a member of Britain's opposition Labour Party.


A 52 year-old man has been arrested in connection with her murder, and all campaigning in Britain's EU referendum has been put on hold in the aftermath of the lawmaker's killing.


Mrs. Cox was attacked outside a library where she was due to hold a meeting with her constituents.


Police are calling her murder a "localized incident", and say they are trying to establish the motive.

Ryan: Not in his plan to rescind his endorsement of Trump

Republican leader, Paul Ryan, says he does not plan to rescind his endorsement of presumptive nominee Donald Trump, in the U.S. presidential race. 

But, in the aftermath of the deadliest shooting in American history, the rift between Mr. Trump and the Republican party establishment continues to grow.

This week the billionaire businessman has taken credit for calling the mass shooting an act of terror, hinted that President Obama was an ISIS sympathizer, and called for a ban on all immigrants from countries with a terrorist problem.

Asked what he thought of Mr Trump's ban on the Washington Post from covering his campaign, Mr Ryan laughed.
