Fraud investigations widen against Rolls Royce amid allegations of bribery in Nigeria

Britain's Serious Fraud Office is reportedly widened it's probe into Rolls Royce amid allegations of suspected bribery in Nigeria.

The UK's Financial Times newspaper says the investigation has now spread to Rolls-Royce's former energy operations in Nigeria.   From London, Catherine Drew reports.

Villa Agrees Sale to Chinese Businessman

Football club Aston Villa has announced plans to be sold to China's Recon Group.


The sale will need to be approved by the Premier League and Football League first before new board members can be appointed.

UK COURT UPHOLDS 'CELEBRITY THREESOME' INJUNCTION

An injunction restricting English media from naming a celebrity involved in an alleged extra marital threesome has been upheld by the UK's highest court.

The Supreme Court ruled on the media blackout after the Court of Appeal last month decided that the injunction should be removed.

The Sun on Sunday newspaper had argued that since the celebrity's identity had been published online as well as in the US, and Scotland, the injunction was unfair.

But the Supreme Court has now struck that ruling down on appeal.

Lord Mance delivered the decision on the celebrity - known in court as PJS.

Bayer makes takeover bid for Monsanto

The German pharmaceutical company Bayer has made an offer to buy the American agricultural firm Monsanto, which would make it the world's largest supplier of seeds and pesticides.

Egypt Air officials say MS804 crashed into the Mediterranean

Egypt Air official now say flight MS804 crashed in the sea on its way from Paris to Cairo.
66 people were on the plane, which disappeared from radar screens at 0230 local time.

Australians call for more refugees as Dutton defends jobs statement

1 Chibok girl rescued in Nigeria

A spokesman for the Nigerian Army has confirmed that 1 of the 219 Nigerian girls kidnapped from their school in Chibok has been rescued.

 Amina Ali Darsha Nkeki was found with a baby wandering in the Sambisi Forest.

She told officers with the Nigerian army, six of her fellow students have died but the vast majority are still being held by Boko Haram.

Islamic State forces pushed back in Libya

Forces loyal to the United Nations backed unity government for Libya have reportedly pushed Islamic State forces out of a town called Abu Grain and back toward Sirte, which remains their strong-hold.

American special forces are reportedly on the ground, trying to help advise those loyal to the unity government and help them fight the Islamic State.

American lawmakers have not found a compromise on how best to fund efforts to combat the Zika virus.

Southern U.S. States are bracing for an outbreak, as the World Health Organization warns, Zika is likely in European countries as well.

Clashes break out between police and opposition protesters in Venezuela

Venezuelan police have dispersed an opposition protest with tear gas in the capital Caracas after rocks were thrown at them.

Demonstrators across the country took to the streets to protest fresh powers the government has given itself as part of a 60 day state of emergency and they are pressing for a referendum to recall the government of president Nicolas Maduro.

DEAL REACHED IN UK JUNIOR DOCTORS ROW

A deal has been reached between the government and representatives of junior doctors in the UK, after a row which has led to a series of strikes.

The government had threatened to impose new contracts on junior doctors as it attempts to make the National Health Service more of a seven day service.

Junior doctors said many of them would lose out in terms of overall pay, and have to work longer hours.

The British Medical Association is recommending a new offer be put to its 40 000 members, as Olly Barratt reports.

UGANDA OPPOSITION LEADER CHARGED WITH TREASON

Kiiza Besigye was brought to court in a heavily guarded prison van on Wednesday morning

 

He appeared briefly before a magistrate and fresh treason charges read to him.

Besigye did not take a plea and had no legal representation.

 

His lawyer Yusuf Nsibambi told us... their legal team was not officially informed about the court proceedings.

 

Besigye lost the February presidential elections. 

 

He is accused of declaring himself the winner and purportedly taking a presidential oath.

 

He was arrested last week, a day before President Yoweri Museveni was sworn-in for a fifth term in office

 

Besigye has been remanded to prison and is expected back in court at the beginning of next month.
