Queen opens parliament with new legislative agenda on prisons, driverless cars

Britain's Queen Elizabeth the Second is  attending the State Opening of Parliament, a ceremony full of pomp which dates back to 1536.  

She is unveiling the governments legislative agenda in a speech in Westminster, which includes measures on reforming prisons and paving the way for driverless cars.  From London, Catherine Drew reports.

Refugees will repay EU spending twice over within five years, says report

Refugees who arrived in Europe last year could repay government spending on them at last twice over within five years - according to a in-depth impact study by a former economic adviser to the European commission.
Refugees will create jobs, increase demand for services and fill gaps in European workforces, the report says.

IOC may ban Russian athletes from Rio Olympics after re-tests

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is set to start re-testing of samples taken during the Sochi 2014 Winter Games and 2012 Olympic Games in London. The investigation was opened after last week's revelations about tarnished samples made by Russia's former top anti-doping scientist. US Primary Tie: Clinton Wins Kentucky, Sanders Takes Oregon

The latest round of US presidential primaries ended in a tie for the Democratic candidates Tuesday evening, with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders claiming victory in Oregon and Hillary Clinton celebrating after a tight race in Kentucky.

US Senate votes in favour of Zika fund

The United States Senate has advanced a one point one billion dollar fund to help combat the Zika virus in the US.

President Obama was seeking one point nine billion dollars of funding, but after weeks of negotiations, Republicans and Democrats reached a compromise.

US opens criminal probe into Russian Olympic doping

The US Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into the doping of dozens of Russian athletes.


The move came on the same day that the International Olympic Committee warned that more than 30 medal winners could be barred from the Rio Games this summer.

U.S. Senate passes bill that would allow 9/11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia

The United States Senate has approved legislation that would
allow survivors and family members of those killed on 9/11 to sue
Saudi Arabia.


While the bill has bipartisan support, the White House has said that
President Obama will likely veto it.

US Congress makes progress on Zika funding

The U.S. Senate has approved an amendment to spend $1.1 billion to combat the Zika virus.

Their plans must be reconcilled with the very different approach by the U.S. House of Representatives, which wants to only spend $600 million and a similar amount must be cut elsewhere from U.S. government spending to cover the re-allocation.

White House Spokesman Josh Earnest says, zika is an emergency and the funds are critical.

White House promises veto of terror lawsuit bill

The Obama administration is promising to veto legislation that would allow the survivors of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks to sue Saudi Arabia.

A bill has been passed by the U.S. Senate will allows such lawsuits to hold Saudi officials and charities liable for funding al Qaeda and other groups.

At the White House, spokesman Josh Earnest said they understand the motives for the bill, but it's still a bad idea.

31 athletes could be banned from Rio Games

Up to 31 athletes from six different sports could be banned from competing at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games after returning positive doping tests.

The announcement comes after the International Olympic Committee used the latest scientific methods to retest hundreds of selected doping samples from the 2008 Games in Beijing.
