North Korea set to hold rare party conference

U.S. officials believe that Kim Jong Un will use the upcoming part conference to highlight the country's achivements in pursuing nuclear weapons.

The Workers Party of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is set to hold it's first conference since 1980 - even before the current leader Kim Jong Un was born.

With a series of provocative tests and missile launches in recent months, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia, Daniel Russel, does not believe that Pyongyang is serious about negotiations.

Last October, Wendy Sherman retired from the U.S. State Department after decades, including most recently, leading the negotiations which culminated in the Iran nuclear deal (the JPCOA).

US Top Diplomat warns Syria violence 'spiraling out of control'

The US Secretary of State has once again condemned the ongoing violence that has plagued the Syrian city Aleppo in recent days and the wider country for several years as the civil war between President Assad's forces and opposition groups continues.

Speaking on Tuesday, John Kerry said the US and international partners were working hard to reaffirm a nationwide cessation of hostilities in the war-weary nation.

The cessation, which began in February, has become frayed in recent weeks.

Mr Kerry also condemned the latest attack on a hospital in Aleppo, Syria's largest city, where violence he said was in danger of spiraling out of control.
