Union petitions for steeper tariffs on raw aluminum imports

An American labor union has petitioned the government to enforce steep
tariffs on aluminum imports.

According to the United Steelworkers union, the move comes as US
imports of raw aluminum products -- particularly from China -- have
surged over the last five years, while domestic production has
dwindled.

US increases special forces in Iraq

The United States is increasing its troop levels and equipment in Iraq as it attempts to retake key territory from the self-declared Islamic State group.
 
The decision comes as allied forces try to combat ISIS in the key city of Mosul.

Nigerian army discovers weapons cache

Nigeria armed forces have unearthed a cache of ammunition in the North-eastern state of Borno.

Army authorities say the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram is being pushed out of territories they once controlled and have reduced the group's ability to carry out large scale attacks.

Russian Fraud in Germany's Healthcare System

An investigation launched by German media organisations has uncovered that Germany's healthcare system could be losing up to 1 billion euros (1.1bn dollars) a year because of Russian fraudsters.


Germany employs many healthcare workers from Russia because of labour shortages and insurance scams are said to be rife.

Brazil's lower house votes in favor of impeachment

A total of 367 lawmakers in Brazil's lower house voted to impeach Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, reaching the two- thirds required majority.

The motion will now carry on to the Senate, if legislators there vote in favor of impeachment, President Dilma Roussed could be suspended as early as May.

US presidential candidates are on their final day of campaigning in New York, ahead of the state's crucial primary vote on Tuesday.

Two Russians found guilty of waging war in Ukraine

A Ukrainian court ruled two Russians captured in eastern Ukraine in 2015 are guilty of waging war and assisting a 'terrorist organization'. Kiev insists they are Russian special services officers, while Moscow insists they were not on duty. Britain's economy could be 6% smaller by 2030 if the country votes to exit the European Union.

That's according to a major report from the UK's Treasury which suggests each British household could be over $6000 a year worse off in the event of a 'BREXIT'.

IMF launches new measures to clampdown on tax avoidance

The International Monetary Fund is to launch a new information sharing plan as part of a renewed push to clampdown on global tax avoidance.

Criminal investigation launched in UK after "drone" strikes British Airways jet

A criminal investigation has been launched in Britain after a suspected drone hit a commercial airliner that was on its descent into London's Heathrow Airport.

Stage set for tough talks between Obama and Saudis, Gulf leaders

US President Obama will travel to Saudi Arabia, Britain and Germany this week for a series of meetings that will focus on the battle against Islamic extremism.

He’ll start in Riyadh for a summit meeting with Gulf leaders.

It’s expected to be dominated by a discussion of regional conflicts, sectarian violence and the ongoing effort to combat the threat posed by Islamic State.
