UK mulls future of steel plants without Tata

The British government says it's considering "all options" for the Indian-owned  steel plant in Wales after Tata steel announced it is planning to sell its UK operations.

Up to 15 thousand jobs in Port Talbot and at other plants are at risk if the plant closes,  a move which will devastate communities heavily reliant on the steel industry.

Tata says it's lost around $3 billion over the past five years and the board finally took the decision to pull out of the UK.

British steel prices have suffered due to the global economic downturn, high energy costs and competition from cheap Chinese steel.

The UK government says it's looking at options to keep the Port Talbot plant operational.

Shadow Business Secretary Angela Eagle says the government must offer support to keep the plant open.
