The final five Republican US Presidential candidates have sparred in
an aggressive and confrontational televised debate.

Donald Trump remains the front runner after winning three of the last
4 state elections.

Four dead, dozen injured in Kansas shooting spree

Three people have been killed and more than a dozen others injured after a mass shooting at a Kansas factory.

The gunman was later shot and killed by officers at Excel Industries in Hesston.

The local sheriff said the shooting spree started in neighboring streets before the gunman entered the Excel factory.

Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton described the shootings but ruled out terrorism.

Mass shooting reported at Kansas factory

Law enforcement officials have confirmed a mass shooting in the US
state of Kansas.


County sheriff for the town of Hesston say between four and seven
people have been killed and 20 injured.

UN considers new sanctions against North Korea

response to last month's nuclear test.

Reforms, new leadership for FIFA debated in Zurich

Sheikh Salman of Bahrain and Gianna Infantino are the leading candiates to replace Sepp Blatter as the head of FIFA.

As representatives from the football (soccer) world debate who is their best candidate, others argue that the focus should be on reforms.

Apple files motion denying FBI request

Apple has filed a motion to vacate in its on-going battle with the FBI
over access to a killer's iPhone. The tech giant rejected the
government's request to create new software to allow law enforcement
officials to break into the iPhone belonging to one of the assailants
in the San Bernardino massacre.

UN confirms unsuccessful air drops of aid into Syrian besieged town

The United Nations has announced on Thursday that the first round of
air drops to Syria's besieged town of Deir al-Zour has failed.

The costly operation was the first attempt to air drop supplies into a
town besieged by the Islamic State.

GOP leadership warns about Donald Trump ahead of debate

Harvard to drop term “master” in titles

Harvard University has announced it's dropping the word "master" from
its academic titles following student protests.

Apple face deadline over order to unlock terrorist's iPhone

 FBI Director James Comey has been  defending his agency's conflict with the technology firm  Apple over the agency's demand to unlock one of the San Bernardino attacker's phones.

Speaking on Capitol Hill  Comey said the developing code to access the iphone in question would not threaten wider security and privacy for Apple customers.

US and China Agree On Draft North Korea Sanctions Resolution

Diplomats at the United Nations say the US and China have agreed on a draft resolution that would expand Security Council sanctions against North Korea.

The move comes after Pyongyang's latest nuclear test at the beginning of January.

FIFA delegates gather in Zurich ahead of presidential vote

Delegates to world football's governing body FIFA are gathering in Zurich ahead of an election for a new president to be held Friday. 

Out a field of five candidates, UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino and Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al Khalifa,  president of the Asian Football Confederation  are the frontrunners. 

The election is part of FIFA's attempts to draw a line under recent scandals.  39 football officials currently face charges in the US over millions of dollars worth of bribes.

Jimmy Savile Report 'Culture of Fear at BBC'

A review into the culture and practices at the BBC, following the Jimmy Savile scandal, has found that senior management were not aware of Mr Savile's conduct.


Serious allegations of abuse surfaced after TV Personality Jimmy Savile's death in 2011, with many of the claims suggesting the sexual abuse of young girls and boys took place on BBC premises.

EU leaders meet in Brussels as migrant crisis dominates

European Union ministers are meeting in Brussels to discuss the migrant crisis amid warnings the issue could fracture the block. 

EU Justice and Home Affairs ministers are meeting and will hear plans from Austria and eight Balkan countries to fingerprint migrants and turn away those without passports. 

Some EU countries are also only accepting Syrians and Iraqis while the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia has blocked entry to Afghans causing thousands to be stranded in Greece.

Veteran broadcaster Blackburn claims he's been sacked over Savile inquiry

Veteran British broadcaster Tony Blackburn says he's been sacked by the BBC in a dispute over the inquiry into fellow presenter Jimmy Savile. 

Savile was found to be a prolific sex offender after his death in 2011, abusing young children for decades.  An inquiry will report today on whether managers at the BBC may have known about this abuse. 

Tony Blackburn says the report into Savile and the BBC will accuse him of wrongdoing, despite being cleared several times of any involvement with a 15 year old girl.  He adds he's been sacked over his evidence to the inquiry.

US, Russian diplomats to "meet soon" on ceasefire agreement as Syrian opposition accepts two-week truce

Report: German government expects 3.6 million refugees by 2020

Germany is expecting an influx of 3.6 million refugees by the end of the decade, with an average of about half a million people arriving each year.

Three teens arrested by counter-terrorism squad following prank videos

In Australia, the State of Victoria's counter terrorism unit has slammed as criminal a number of prank videos in which three young men, the Jalal brothers, wearing traditional Middle Eastern attire, pretend to fire an AK-47 at unsuspecting victims.
Brothers Max, Rebeen and Arman Jalal were arrested in Melbourne on Thursday after surrendering themselves to police following a search of their South Morang home by Victoria Police's counter terrorism unit.
Videos of the pranks were uploaded to social media on Tuesday but police say they have been aware of the trio's activities, and other videos, for weeks.
