Russia blocks Ukrainian trucks transit across the country

Moscow has banned Ukrainian trucks from driving across the country in retaliation to Ukraine's blocking of Russian trucks. This is yet another manifestation of rising tensions between the neighboring countries, caused by Moscow's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its support to anti-government rebels in eastern Ukraine.   Daria Bondarchuk reports from the Russian capital.

Obama to host ASEAN leaders in California

The ten leaders of ASEAN are in California for a summit meeting with US President Barack Obama - the first of its kind on American soil.


They'll gather at the Sunnylands Estate in Rancho Mirage for two days of talks on economic issues, strategic challenges and counter-terrorism, followed by an investment conference in San Francisco on Wednesday.

Battle Lines Drawn in Washington After Scalia's Death

Battle lines are being drawn in Washington after the unexpected death of one of the most conservative members of the Supreme Court, Justice Antonin Scalia.

After his passing on Saturday at the age of 79, Barack Obama has said he will nominate a replacement, but Republican candidates for president have called for a delay until after the election.

'THREE BRITISH MEN' ACCUSED OF SMUGGLING WEAPONS TO KURDS

Three men have been arrested in Greece, accused of trying to smuggle a cache of weapons and ammunition into Turkey.

Local police say 22 firearms, telescopic sights and over 200 000 rounds of ammunition were stashed in a caravan.

Two men with British passports were arrested in Alexandroupolis, while a third was arrested at the border with Turkey.

They're due to be charged later this week and have reportedly asked to speak in court in Kurdish.

US hosts ASEAN leaders at Sunnylands, California

U.S. President Barack Obama is set to host the leaders from the 10 ASEAN nations at the Sunnylands rachn in Rancho Mirage, California.

The first day of talks will focus on the economy and global trade, while the second day's agenda is security and international relations, including the South China Sea.

Officials Discuss Countering Financing of Islamic State Group

Commercial Flights to Resume between US and Cuba

Commercial US airlines will soon be allowed to fly scheduled service between Cuba and the United States— something they have not been allowed to do for more than 50 years. 

The two countries are scheduled to sign an agreement formalizing the plan for authorized travel on Tuesday.

California Gas Leak Under Control

The natural gas leak that flowed for more than three months and
sickened hundreds of residents near Los Angeles has been temporarily
capped. The Southern California Gas Company is now pouring cement into
the leaking well to permanently plug the dangerous fumes.

Al Assad vows to retake whole of Syria as skepticism about ceasefire grows in Washington

Syrian President Bashar al Assad has vowed to retake control of the entire country and he's rejecting the UN's claims that he's committed war crimes.


Meanwhile the US government says it wants to see proof that Russia is serious about supporting a ceasefire in Syria that was negotiated only yesterday.

UN aid to Syria in coming hours

The United Nations hopes to deliver aid to besieged parts of Syria in the coming hours, following an agreement to temporarily stop fighting next week.

The UN has been meeting to arrange the delivery of supplies to areas that have been made inaccessible by conflict. 

However, Syria's President Bashar al-Assad has said he is determined to continue fighting to win back "the whole country".

UN Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the UN hoped to gain access as soon as possible.

UN urges South Sudan opposition leader to take VP position

The United Nations says South Sudan's newly-appointed Vice President
should return to the country to take up his position.

The country's President Salva Kiir reappointed his deputy Riek Machar,
but Machar is refusing to return from Ethiopia, citing security
concerns.

South Sudan has been embroiled in civil war for more than two years
after Kiir accused his Machar of plotting a coup.

The two men signed of a peace agreement in August but fighting
continues throughout much of the country.

stressed Machar must return to take up the vice presidency.

Arab countries agree to join fight against ISIS

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have offered more military support in the fight against the self-declared Islamic State group in Syria.

US Retail Sales Rise More Than Expected

Americans appear to have ramped up their spending in January, according to new data out from the US Commerce Department.
