US weighs military action in Libya


The U.S. is considering military action in Libya, in order to prevent the so-called Islamic-State from gaining a stronger foothold there.

Australian cancer breakthrough hailed.

A group of researchers in Melbourne have hailed a single tablet that kills cancer cells in people suffering from an advanced form of leukaemia, as a major breakthrough in the fight against cancer.

Facebook Smashes Wall Street Earnings and Revenue Estimates

Facebook has easily topped Wall Street's estimates for its revenue and earnings in the fourth quarter of 2015.

The social networking firm said its revenue was nearly 18 billion dollars for the full year of 2015 -a 44 per cent increase from 2014.

Computer Beats Human Champion at Game of Go

An artificial intelligence program has beaten a top ranked human at the board game Go. 

Experts say the ancient Chinese game is a much tougher challenge for computers than chess because there are many more ways a Go match can play out.

US urges all parties to head to Geneva for Syria talks

The U.S. wants to urge all interested parties to head to Geneva to participate in talks aimed at starting a political process to resolve the nearly five year long Syrian crisis.

Opposition groups have said they might not show up unless the United Nations takes seriously their demands for a complete halt on attacks against civilians.

U.S. State Department deputy spokesman Mark Toner says Washington does take all concerns seriously but does not want any more preconditions to possibly delay a political solution.

US scientists warn long wait for Zika vaccine

American scientists are warning, it could be a decade before a Zika vaccine is developed.

In the past year, the virus has exploded, with the latest case confirmed in Arlington, Virginia, just outside the American capital city.

Scientists are worried about the rising rate of micro-cephaly among pregnant women, possible sexual transmission and the upcoming Olympic Games in Brazil, where the majority of the infections are.

U.S. State Department deputy spokesman Mark Toner says they are working with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control to keep travelling Americans informed.

Authorities Urge Remaining Armed Oregon Protesters to Leave Refuge

US authorities are urging a group of armed men occupying a wildlife refuge in Oregon to abandon their protest.

It comes a day after the spokesman was killed and several others were arrested, including leader Ammon Bundy.

They have been demanding the right to graze cattle on federal land.

State police and the FBI have imposed additional security around the site and said those who remain are "free to leave".

The US Federal Reserve has voted to leave interest rates unchanged,
noting that economic growth has "slowed" in the last month.

SHOOTING AT SEATTLE HOMELESS ENCAMPMENT

Two people have been killed and at least three more have been wounded in a shooting at a homeless camp in the US city of Seattle.

The incident took place at an encampment, known locally as 'the Jungle'.
