South Sudan President Appoints 50 Opposition Members into Transitional Parliament

LEAD
South Sudan's President Salva Kiir has appointed 50 members from the opposition into the transitional parliament.

The decision was reached on thursday at a high level meeting held in the capital Juba, also attended by South African vice president Cyril Ramaphosa

Bushfires in Western Australia destroy small town

Bushfires in Australia's west has destroyed the little town of Yarloop, about 130 kilometres south of the West Australian capital, Perth while three people who were missing in the fireground have been found safe and well.

Poland to sack all staff at public broadcaster

Every member of staff at Poland's public broadcaster will be sacked in the wake of a media clampdown by the new government according to the Polish PAP news agency. 

It comes in the wake of new legislation giving the Polish government more control over public media which has drawn severe criticism from the European Union.

CHINESE SHARES RISE AFTER CIRCUIT-BREAKER SUSPENDED

Chinese stocks have risen following a move by authorities to suspend a circuit-breaker which had failed to curb sharp falls in shares.

The Shanghai composite saw volatile trading but closed higher, a day after the circuit-breaker was dumped.

Global stock markets have been under pressure on concerns about China, and the state of its economy.

British diplomats reportedly feel Prime Minister David Cameron is edging closer to a deal with EU allies on reform of the bloc.

BRITONS ADVISED NOT TO DRINK

Britons have been warned there is no such thing as a safe level of alcohol consumption, in the country's toughest drinking guidelines ever.

The new advice from Britain's chief medical officer says men and women who do drink regularly should limit the amount to 14 units a week - that's the equivalent of six pints of beer or seven glasses of wine.

The guidance comes from new research suggesting any amount of drinking increases the risk of cancer.

Obama defends executive actions on gun control at town hall meeting

US President Barack Obama has defended his push for tighter gun measures at a nationally televised town hall meeting.

He took questions from the public as he pressed for support for the executive measures he announced on Tuesday, which include tightening background checks for gun buyers and better licensing for sellers.

UN: Syrian government greenlights aid deliveries to Madaya, other hard-to-reach areas


The Syrian government has approved humanitarian deliveries to some of the hardest-to-reach and besieged areas in Syria, where people are said to be facing starvation and death.


The United Nations on Thursday said Damascus had approved urgent aid access to areas including Madaya, Foah and Kefraya.

Kerry to China: no more "business as usual" with North Korea

The US is calling on China to end what it calls a "business as usual" approach to North Korea in light of Pyongyang's claim to have tested a hydrogen bomb.

Saudi, Iranian relations worsen

Relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran worsened after Tehran accused Riyadh of damaging the Iranian embassy in Yemen.
