U.S. Authorizes Arms Sales to Taiwan

The U.S. is going ahead with the sale of a $1.83 billion arms sale package to Taiwan. The Obama administration formally notified Congress on Wednesday. China is strongly condemning the arms sale. Ellen Scott reports from Washington.

FBI: San Bernardino Shooters Did NOT Post on Social Media

Contrary to previous reports, the FBI now says the couple who killed 14 people in a shooting in San Bernardino two weeks ago did NOT post their support for jihad on social media. 
The FBI says they only established their jihadi support in private emails and messages.

Cameron: No ban for Donald Trump

UK Prime Minister David Cameron says he does not agree with those who think Donald Trump should be banned from entering the UK following a string of controversial comments from the US presidential hopeful...

Addressing MPs at the final Prime Minister's Questions before Christmas, Mr Cameron said he was proud to represent one of the "most successful multi-racial, multi-faith and multi-ethnic countries" in the world.

A petition to block Mr Trump from entering the UK following his comments about safety in London and a ban on Muslims from entering the US has attracted more than half a million signatures.

European Union rolls out overhaul of data protection laws

The European Union has agreed its biggest overhaul of privacy laws in the last 20 years.

The deal on new data protection regulation will give consumers more power against large companies who hold their data but the national governments in the EU will continue to be able to decide whether to raise the age limit for social media users from 13 to 16 years old.

Los Angeles officials concede threat to schools was a hoax

Officials in Los Angeles now say a threat to attack the city's schools appears to have been an elaborate hoax.


The city closed more than 900 schools on Tuesday in light of the e-mailed threat, but in New York - where the same threat was received - the schools remained open.

UN aid agencies send emergency response in Burundi

The United Nations says its aid agencies are responding to an
increased escalation of violence in Burundi with emergency response
teams.

Recent fighting has left over 150,000 people internally displaced,
with 645,000 suffering from severe food insecurity due to the
conflict.

The head of the UN's humanitarian agency, John Ging, told reporters at
UN headquarters in New York that there is an urgent need to bring a
political solution to the volatile country.
