European Central Bank cuts deposit rates and extends quantitative easing

The European Central Bank has cut deposit rates and is continuing its quantitative easing programme of buying government bonds in the eurozone.

The measures are aimed at tackling persistently low inflation rates in Europe..

Report says US Secret Service "in Crisis"

A new report into the US Secret Service concludes that President Obama's security is being compromised by an institution "in crisis".

Russia's President attacks Turkey in nation speech

Russian President Vladimir Putin has attacked Turkey in his annual
Federal Assembly speech for shooting down the Russian fighter plane.

In the nationally broadcast speech he threatened more action against
Turkey on top of the economic and cultural sanctions already imposed.

Two more arrests made in Brussels in connection to Paris attacks

Two more suspects have been charged with terrorism in Belgium in connection to the attacks in Paris.

First UK airstrikes in Syria target IS-controlled air fields

Britain has carried out its first airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Syria, following a late night parliamentary vote Wednesday authorising the operation. 

Four RAF Tornado jets targeted the Omar oil fields in eastern Syria which are under the control of the so-called Islamic State.    The UK's Defence Secretary described the mission as successful.   From London, Catherine Drew reports.

Pistorius to head back to jail after appeals court rules he is guilty of murder


South African athlete Oscar Pistorius is to return to prison for the shooting death of his girlfriend in 2013, after an appeals court overturned an earlier manslaughter verdict and found him guilty of murder.

The Olympic and Paralympic champion is currently under house arrest after serving one year of his original 5 year prison term for the manslaughter of Reeva Steencamp.  She was shot through a toilet door.  

Pistorius claimed he thought she was an intruder, however Justice Eric Leach ruled that knowing the identity of the person behind the door was "irrelevant to his guilt".  

The judge said the lower court did not correctly apply a rule known as "dolus eventualis", which is when someone should foresee a death might result from their actions. 

Justice Eric Leach announced the ruling, which will see Pistorius returned to the lower court for sentencing.

Denmark holds referendum on "opt outs" of EU law

Denmark is voting on whether to change its law to prevent the government from being able to opt out of certain European Union legislation.

British Tornado jets complete first air strikes in Syria

British RAF Tornado jets have carried out their first air strikes against Islamic State targets in Syria just hours after British MPs approved the bombing campaign...

The strikes targeted the Omar oil fields in eastern Syria which is under IS control.

Four Tornado jets took off, with the UK Defence Secretary Michael Fallon saying the strikes were "successful."

2 suspects dead after California mass shooting

Two suspects believed responsible for a shooting spree at a social services center in California that left 14 people dead have themselves been killed by police.


A man and a woman carrying assault rifles were shot dead after a high speed chase.


A third person has been taken into custody.

US welcomes UK vote on Islamic State airstrikes

The Obama administration is welcoming the news, the British Parliament has voted in favor of airstrikes aimed at the Islamic State.

Germany is also increasing its commitment to fighting the militant origanization.

US Federal Reserve likely to raise interest rates

U.S. Federal reserve chair Janet Yellen is signalling that it is likely the Federal Open Market Committee will raise interest rates, probably at it's December meeting.

During a speech to the Economic Club of Washington, she said the U.S. economy has recovered from the worst of the Great recession and financial collapse of 7 years ago, but the future is always uncertain.

And she told the crowd, not matter what decision is taken, any interest rate increases will be small and over time.

14 dead in California shooting

At least 14 are dead and 14 injured in a mass shooting at a mental health facility in San Bernadino, California.

Initial reports indicate three gunmen stormed the Inland Regional Center for social services.

UK MPs VOTE FOR SYRIA AIR STRIKES

British lawmakers have voted in favour or air strikes on Islamic State targets in Syria.

The UK is already bombing IS positions in Iraq but can now extend its mission across the border.

The motion for air strikes passed comfortably - by 397 votes to 223.
