Concerns about backlash against American Muslim community

The governors of nine U.S. states, all Republicans, have said they are taking actions from preventing Syrian refugees from coming to America.

This as U.S. President Barack Obama repeated his promise to increase the number of slots for refugees from the region, and especially from Syria.

The governors say it's a matter of the safety and security of the people already living in their states, but U.S. Senator Christopher Coons told WHYY radio of Philadelphia, his Muslim-American constituents are worried about a broader backlash.

Russia To Begin Purge of Athletics Officials

Russia's athletics federation has met in Moscow to decide which of its staff need to go.

The country's sports minister says he hopes Russian athletes will be back in competition within three months…after Russia's suspension from international athletics over charges of widespread doping.

Marriott International to buy Starwood Hotels for $12.2B

American hotel group, Marrriot International is set to buy Starwood
Hotels and Resorts for $12.2 billion.

ISIS threatens Washington while CIA director warns Paris "not a one-off"

ISIS has released propaganda videos celebrating the attacks in Paris and threatening to carry out another in Washington, D.C.

Speaking in the city today (Monday), CIA Director John Brennan said the deadly attacks in Paris are not "a one-off event" and that intelligence agencies will be redoubling efforts to uncover terror plots.

Obama says no strategy changes after France attacks

President Obama says there will be no change in the US strategy fighting towards Islamic State, despite Friday's attacks on Paris that left 129 people dead.


Speaking at the G20 in Turkey, he pledged to provide France with further intelligence co-operation, but said there were "no specific mentions" of any plan to attack Paris.


He said Islamic State is not "a traditional military opponent", and our Washington Correspondent Simon Marks says the President vowed only to intensify the existing strategy.

5 Guantanamo Bay detainees transferred to UAE

Five men from Yemen who were held at the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for nearly 14 years have been transferred to UAE.

Belgian-born Abdelhamid Abaaoud named mastermind behind Paris attacks

French authorities have identified Belgian-born Abdelhamid Abaaoud as the mastermind of the attacks in Paris.

Russia to clean up its act after national Athletics Federation's suspension
