Nigerian army rescues 'over 300 women and children' from miltants

The Nigerian Army says it has rescued 338 people including almost 200 children after a raid in the northeastern state of Borno.

The captives were being held by Boko Haram militants.

Volkswagen reports first quarterly loss in fifteen years

Volkswagen has recorded its first quarterly loss in fifteen years as a result of the emissions scandal involving some of its diesel engines. 

The crisis is the worst in the German automaker's history.

Volkswagen has issued a full year profit warning, as the cost of repairing its cars that were at the centre of the recent emissions scandal starts to hit its earnings. 

The German carmaker was found by the US Environmental Protection Agency to have cheated on emissions tests of some of its diesel cars, and has reported a net loss of 1.9 billion dollars in the third quarter of this year.

Australian manhunt comes to an end after 8 years

A manhunt in Australia's south east has ended with the arrest on Wednesday of father and son fugitives Gino and Mark Stocco.
The two have been on the run for 8 years, but the search has intensified in the last two weeks since they fired at Police near Wagga Wagga in southern New South Wales.

Austrian threatens to rebuild borders with Slovenia in the EU's border-free zone amid refugee crisis

Russia confirms death of its first military staff member in Syria

Moscow confirmed the first death among its military personnel in Syria. The relatives of the Russian contractor rejected allegations the young man had committed suicide. Russia, who's been bombing Islamic militants in Syria since September 30, continues to deny it has boots on the ground. Daria Bondarchuk reports from the Russian capital.

Prince Harry visits US

Apple and Twitter post quarterly earnings

For the 12th quarter in a row Apple's earnings have beaten Wall Street
estimates with profits up at 31%.

But while sales of the iPhone missed some analyst expectations, Apple
say they are continuing to win customers from their major competitors.

Médecins Sans Frontières Hospital Struck In Yemen, UN Responds

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has condemned an airstrike by the Saudi-led coalition that on Monday hit a hospital in Yemen, run by medical aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres and supported by the World Health Organization and UNICEF. Mr. Ban is calling for a full investigation of the incident.

US Votes Against UN Cuba Resolution


The US has voted against a resolution at the United Nations condemning the American trade embargo on Cuba, the only member country to do so apart from Israel.

Washington usually does vote down the annual measure, but following Barack Obama and Raul Castro's recent moves towards normalising relations, it was thought it may abstain this year.

China brands US warship's passage "illegal"

A US warship which passed close to disputed Islands in the South China sea has been branded 'illegal' by Chinese officials.

The USS Lassen, a guided-missile destroyer, sailed within 12 nautical miles of the islands in the Spratly archipelago where China has been building several artificially created reefs.
