Rep. Paul Ryan tentatively agrees to be Speaker

U.S. Representative Paul Ryan has agreed to be Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, as long as certain conditions are made.

Current Speaker John Boehner announced he is retiring at the end of October, following the historic visit of Pope Francis 1.

Starbucks and Fiat fined by the EU for tax avoidance

The European Commission has ruled that Fiat and Starbucks have been given illegal tax advantages in the European Union. 

An investigation has found that Fiat in Luxembourg and Starbucks in the Netherlands have been benefitting from controversial tax structures for years and have now been ordered to pay fines.

Bashar al Assad and Vladimir Putin hold "lengthy" talks in Moscow

LEAD: Syria's president Bashar al Assad secretly flew to Moscow on Tuesday to thank Russian president Vladimir Putin for his military support, media reports suggest. Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov says the talks in Moscow were lengthy and focused on Russia's military operation in Syria. Anya Ardayeva reports from the Russian capital.

Slovenian government calls in army to manage refugees and migrants

The Slovenian government has deployed the country's army to help tackle the influx of refugees and migrants crossing their border.

Soldiers will now join border guards to patrol Slovenia's 670 kilometer border with Croatia.

Ban visits Jerusalem to call for calm

United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon has visited Jerusalem for talks with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at a time of increased violence in the country. 

Eight Israelis and more than 40 Palestinians have been killed in recent weeks following an upsurge in random attacks on Israelis.   Tensions have risen amid rumours that Israel plans to relax long standing rulues to strengthen Jewish rights  on Jerusalem's al Aqsa Mosque, which is also revered by Jews. 

Israeli Prime Minister used the visit of Ban Ki-moon to say there had been no rules changes regarding  the revered mosque.

Child and mother's bodies identified by DNA over 1100 km (700 miles) apart

Police are baffled after the body of a young girl which was found near a suitcase on the side of a road in a remote part of South Australia has been identified as the daughter of an Alice Springs woman whose remains were found in the notorius Belanglo State Forest in New South Wales.

Ferrari prepares for US IPO

White House Congratulates New Canadian PM

The White House has congratulated Canada's newly elected Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau [PRON: Troo-doe] after his party won a sweeping victory in this Monday's general election.

President Barack Obama has spoken to Mr. Trudeau by phone, and the White House says both leaders committed to strengthening joint efforts to promote trade, combat terrorism and mitigate climate change.

Mr. Obama also said he looks forward to meeting Mr. Trudeau in the near future.

Spokesman Josh Earnest said the US is confident its strong alliance with its neighbour to the north will continue.

UN says number of migrant sea arrivals in Greece has surpassed half million mark

Google Invests In Chinese AI Startup

Google has reportedly invested more than $60 million in its
China-based Android Wear partner Mobvoi, landing the tech giant a
minority stake in the artificial-intelligence developer that operates
a Chinese-language search engine. This a return to China for Google,
after the company mostly halted business in the country in 2010 due to
censorship concerns.

Credit Agricole agrees $800 banking sanctions fine

French bank Credit Agricole has reached an agreement with US
authorities to pay almost $800 million for violating banking
sanctions.
