John Kerry to head to the Middle East this week

US Secretary of State John Kerry will be meeting Middle Eastern leaders this week amid growing tensions in the region.
The US State Department says details are yet to be finalized but he will hold meetings about the crisis in Syria and is also likely to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the violence in Jerusalem.
State Department Spokesman Mark Toner said John Kerry will be calling for calm in Israel.

Croatia opens Serbian border releasing bottleneck of refugees and migrants

The Croatian government has opened its border with Serbia after thousands of migrants and refugees are stranded there.

The United Nations described the situation for the people at the Serbian border village of Berkasovo as "dire".

US agrees to clean up radioactive Spanish site

Nearly 50 years after the original accident, the U.S. has reached an agreement to clean up a Spanish island where four American nuclear bombs fell - but did not detonate.

In 1966, two planes collided over Palomares, and two of the four American atomic bombs on board broke apart, scattering highly radioactive plutonium over a 200-hectare (490-acre) area.

US Judge Set to Decide Whether To Re-Start 9/11 Guantanamo Trial

A judge in the US is set to decide whether he can move forward with efforts to try five prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, for aiding and abetting the September 11th attacks.


Previous efforts to try the five men came to a halt 18 months ago.

UN Secretary-General condemns Iran teenage executions

US confirms death of Khorasan official death

The White House is confirming that an American airstrike lead to the death of one of the highest-ranking leaders of the Khorasan Group, a Saudi national also known as Sanafi al-Nasr.

The Khorasan Group had a goal of carrying out terrorist attacks in the U.S. or Europe, with ties to the al-Nusra Front, the Syrian group with allied to al Qaeda.

At the White House, spokesman Josh Earnest noted this is one example of how the U.S. and allied air campaign is succeeding in northern Syria.

Rampant speculation about VP Biden joining Election 2016 race

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden is close to finally announcing his decision on whether he will join the race to become the Democrats' nominee to run for the White House.

Despite not participating in the first Democratic candidates debate, the Vice President wins 18 percent of voter support in the latest CNN poll. Bernie Sanders gained some support while Hillary Clinton stayed level, despite many positive reviews of her performance.

Chinese hackers target US companies despite Xi's pledge

Chinese government hackers have tried to penetrate the computer networks of US companies, despite a pledge by China's president that they would not do so.

NATO begins biggest drills in over a decade

The NATO military alliance is starting three weeks of maneuvers described as its biggest military exercises since 2002.
