Vladimir Putin says airstrikes set to "stabilize the legitimate authority" in Syria

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow's goal in Syria campaign was to "stabilise the legitimate authority" of the Syrian President and "create conditions for a political compromise". This is a new line in Moscow's rhetoric in defense of its airstrikes which earlier it claimed were part of its fight against the Islamic State terrorists operating in Syria. Gains for Syrian government forces, with help from Russians

The Syrian government forces appear to be regaining ground, thanks in part to more than 60 bombing runs carried out by the Russian military.

With the U.S. and it's allies specifically targeting the Islamic State, running some two dozen airstrikes, a conference call to coordinate with the Russians has been instituted.

However, questions remain about what Russia's endgame actually is.

And U.S. President Barack Obama's Syria policy is coming under increasing pressure, with U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, running for the White House, telling NBC News' Meet the Press, the situation is a quagmire.

US officials say train and equip program only "paused"

Senior administration officials in Washington say the program to train and equip groups of Syrian rebels has not been cancelled, as recent media reports suggest, but rather "paused."

They say the program is undergoing a stage of adaptation, as officials re-evaluate the changing conditions on the ground in the fight against the Islamic state group.

Administration representatives said rebel fighters who have already completed the program will continue to receive support, and the US military will carry on working closely with local groups in the fight against ISIS.

Critics say the half-a-billion dollar train and equip program never came close to achieving its goals and suffered from well-publicized setbacks.
