Theresa May warns Britain's net migration threatens "cohesive society"

Britain's Home Secretary Theresa May says the number of people coming to live in Britain must be significantly decreased in order to build what she called "a cohesive society".

Speaking a the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester, Theresa May said current levels of net migration were not needed and brought little economic benefit.   In the past year 330 thousand more people came to live in the UK than moved abroad.

She said Britain would do what it could for refugees but that economic migrants could not be given a free pass to live in the UK, as the country's infrastructure such as housing, schools and hospitals were already under great stress.

NATO says Russia has built up military presence in Syria

The NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg says there has been a large build up of Russian military forces in Syria.

At a press conference in Brussels he also said two recent violations of Turkish airspace by Russian warplanes do not look like accidents.

Russia says its planes entered Turkish airspace due to bad weather as they carry out attacks in Syria.

Moscow says the airstrikes are on Islamic State targets but the head of NATO says he believes they are hitting rebel held areas in Syria also.

Turkey has summoned the Russian ambassador twice to explain the airspace violations.

Jens Stoltenberg - secretary general of NATO - says they are concerned about the amount of Russian troops on Syrian territory.

IOD: HOLD UK EU REFERENDUM BEFORE 2017

Britain's planned EU referendum could end up being a confidence vote on the government, and risks being affected by domestic European politics, according to a leading business group.

The Institute of Directors is warning if the vote is not held until 2017, French and German elections in that year may end up affecting it.

Prime Minister David Cameron says he can secure reform of Britain's relationship with the EU, and will then campaign to stay in the bloc in a vote by 2017.
