EU leaders arrive for refugee and migrant crisis summit

European Union leaders are arriving in Brussels today for an emergency summit on the refugee crisis with the member states deeply divided on further action.

A quota system to relocate 120 thousands asylum seekers from Syria, Iraq and Eritrea across the EU's 28 countries was penned by EU interior ministers Tuesday.

But Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary voted against the plan saying people who are placed in countries they don't want to remain in, will travel to their desired country easily through the EU's border free schengen zone.

Entering the summit, UK Prime Minister David Cameron said his country will exercise its right to opt out of the quota system.

EU leaders meet in Brussels to discuss refugee quotas

European Union leaders are arriving in Brussels today for an emergency summit to rubber stamp a plan to redistribute 120 thousand refugees throughout the 28 EU member states.

The proposed quota system has become divisive with countries like Hungary and Poland arguing against the plan - Slovakia has even says it will break with EU law and not implement it.

Germany, meanwhile, is encouraging fellow EU states to adopt the quota system.

The quotas will only cover asylum request from conflict torn countries like Syria, Iraq and Eritrea but thousands of people from other middle eastern and sub-saharan African countries are continuing to make their way into the EU.

Russia reinforces its military facilities in Syria, new satellite imagery purports

US Secretary of State John Kerry said while Russia's recent military build-up in Syria is consistent with protecting its own forces in the country, Moscow's objectives are still unclear. He added if its military is there to help the Syrian President defeat its opponents rather then fight against the radical extremists of the Islamic State, it could "be a problem".
